Hurray for The Riff Raff – Look Out Mama (2012)

...Ne tako dobar kao zadnji Feist, ali bolji nego zadnja 2 Cat Power...

Fronted by singer/songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra, Look Out Mama is the third album from New Orleans-based Hurray for the Riff Raff. Steeped in traditional folk music, Look Out Mama is a dazzling mix of fresh Americana that will immediately draw listeners' attention. Combining elements of The Carter Family, The Band, and rockabilly with some classic yodelling, Look Out Mama rides high on the smooth, honey vocals of Segarra.

Look Out Mama never lets up in its innovative style. "What's Wrong With Me" is a sweet torch song that captures the emotion with a slight quaver in the vocal. "Ode To John And Yoko" ups the pop quotient with some clever allusions and psychedelic effects. "Lake Of Fire" subtlty rocks then charges like a locomotive. "Go Out On The Road" is a classic western love song with percussion that sounds like horses hooves.
The previous self-released efforts by Hurray For The Riff Raff had escaped my radar, but I'm guessing Look Out Mama combines the best of those releases and will grab the attention of fans of folk and Americana. I'll definitely be seeking them out as they tour.
