Pleasure Leftists – The Woods of Heaven (2015)

The Cleveland-born punks in Pleasure Leftists have cleaned up a bit for their debut full-length for Deranged Records. A pair of shorter form releases presented a thunderclapping rendition of post-punk that could’ve only come from a crew of former hardcore kids, but The Woods of Heaven goes full ’80s, using spiraling guitar lines and nervy drum clutter to conjure an anxiety as overwhelming as the genre’s forebears.

Autobahn – Dissemble (2015)

Fuelled by the industrial meltdown and recession that surrounds them, Autobahn are an incendiary throwback to the post-punk experimentalism of 1979. Second generation children of the Thatcher era, raised on broken promises and shattered dreams, there’s an unparalleled combination of romanticism and nihilism about Dissemble that makes it one of 2015’s finest debuts.
Recorded over a 6-week period in a disused church with localproducer Matt Peel, Dissemble represents the culmination of two years hard work since the band’s formation in early 2013. While their live shows have undoubtedly enhanced the band’s reputation over that time, their recorded output has been sparse in comparison.

Red River Dialect – Tender Gold & Gentle Blue (2015)

The songs on Tender Gold & Gentle Blue were initially written as a personal coping method for bandleader David Morris after the sudden death of his father. These acoustic meditations on loss weren’t really intended for the band, nor even for release, but in a poignant show of solidarity, Morris’ musical family closed ranks around their friend and tempered their talents to match the mood of this quiet, introspective set.

Built In Sun – Built In Sun (2015)

Built In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer and Pall Jenkins.  The two were in the local band Black Heart Procession together.
Joe was working on a collection of music during breaks between drumming for The Shins and Cold War Kids releases. Joe asked Pall (Three Mile Pilot, Black Heart Procession, Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects) if he would work on some vocals and lyrics for a track. Pall said yes and what came from that was sounding great.  Joe sent him all the tracks and asked Pall to keep going and Built In Sun was complete.

John Moreland – High On Tulsa Heat (2015)

The Oklahoma folk singer John Moreland has a beautifully abraded voice, full of potholes and gravel. Rarely does he wield it with power — instead, his soft hallow scrape is marked by flexibility and candor. At the beginning of “Cherokee,” one of the many fine songs on High on Tulsa Heat, his third full-length solo album, he sings, “I guess I’ve got a taste for poison/ I’ve given up on ever being well,” and it sounds as if he’s singing from the sickbed somewhere, with no visitors on the horizon.
Before he was working the shadowy corners of folk-country, Mr. Moreland played in metalcore and hardcore bands. The lasting effect of that is perhaps in his music’s admirable lack of sentimentality. It’s not that he doesn’t feel deeply — he certainly does — but he’s no passive canvas.

Matchess – Somnaphoria (2015)

“Bewitching” is the only word we could come up with to describe “Seraphastra” when we first heard it in 2013. Originally released on an extremely limited cassette by the Digitalis label, the album makes a welcome debut to the vinyl format. Matchess is the solo project of Whitney Johnson, singer & keyboardist for Chicago band Verma, whose banshee-like wail & synth squall can be heard over the band’s more recent Trouble In Mind releases “Coltan” & “Sunrunner” but Johnson’s work as Matchess is a different beast all together. Foregoing her band’s skyward arching krautrock jams for a more subtle, ‘Radiophonic’ approach, “Seraphastra”s alien drones & rhythmic pulse are grounded in the mystic & cosmic efflivium of modern spiritual synth music.
