Does It Look Like I'm Here... Reminiscence of 2010

Majne liste...
See ya!

Arcade fire i ostali

1.Arcade Fire-The Suburbs
Montreal’s Arcade Fire successfully avoided the sophomore slump with 2007’s apocalyptic Neon Bible. Heavier and more uncertain than their near perfect, darkly optimistic 2004 debut, the album aimed for the nosebleed section and left a red mess. Having already fled the cold comforts of suburbia on Funeral and suffered beneath the weight of the world on Neon Bible, it seems fitting that a band once so consumed with spiritual and social middle-class fury, should find peace “under the overpass in the parking lot.” If nostalgia is just pain recalled, repaired, and resold, then The Suburbs is its sales manual. Inspired by brothers Win and William Butler’s suburban Houston, TX upbringing, the 16-track record plays out like a long lost summer weekend, with the jaunty but melancholy

Comment Je Me Suis Dispute...(Ou Ma Vie Sexuelle)-1996

In this satiric comedy-drama from France, Paul (Mathieu Amalric) is an assistant professor of philosophy disenchanted with teaching and distracted enough that he can't (or won't) finish the dissertation that would allow him to become a full professor. Esther (Emmanuelle Devos) has been his girlfriend for nearly a decade; while he's no longer happy with the relationship, he has trouble working up the courage to break it off. He's smitten with Sylvia (Marianne Denicourt), the lover of his best friend Nathan (Emmanuel Salinger); Paul and Sylvia had a brief fling two years ago, and he can't get her out of his mind. However, once Paul gives Esther her walking papers, he starts chasing after Valerie (Jeanne Balibar), while also keeping his eye on Patricia (Chiara Mastroianni), the girlfriend of his cousin (and roommate) Bob (Thibault de Montalembert). It's hard to imagine Paul having much time to think about anything else amidst all this romantic tumult, but when Rabier (Michel Vuillermoz), a former friend, gets a top spot in Paul's department, it leads to an ongoing argument that both adds to and reflects the turmoil of his romantic life. Amalric's performance earned him a 1997 César Award as Most Promising Young Actor.

Les Rallizes Denudes

Les Rallizes Denudes
Heavier Than A Death In The Family
[Reissue - Phoenix Records, 2010]

Although the ultra-mysterious and rumour-cloaked Les Rallizes Denudes/Hadaka no Rallizes existed in various forms from November 1967 to their last gig in October 1996 they are practically unknown in - let alone out of - Japan. Their recorded output is incredibly rare and highly priced and interviews or articles in the music press virtually non-existent. Tie that in with links to radical left-wing politics, extreme sensory assault at live shows and a general revolutionary aura and you have what must be the ultimate cult group.

Jean-Michel Basquiat The Radiant Child

Jean-Michel Basquiat The Radiant Child
Dir : Tamra Davis,2010

Centered on a rare interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Basquiat over twenty years ago, this definitive documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the young artist. In the crime-ridden NYC of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO. In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with “rock star status.” He achieves critical and commercial success, though he is constantly confronted by racism from his peers. In 1985 he and Andy Warhol become close friends and painting collaborators, but they part ways and Warhol dies suddenly in 1987. Basquiat’s heroin addiction worsens, and he dies of an overdose in 1988 at the age of 27. The artist was 25 years old at the height of his career, and today his canvases sell for more than a million dollars. With compassion and psychological insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, an artist of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody.

Tapes ‘n Tapes – Outside (2011)

Minneapolis, MN, indie rock classicists Tapes 'n Tapes formed in the winter of 2003, when guitarist/vocalist Josh Grier (aka "Tapes 1"), bassist Matt Kretzmann ("'n") and guitarist Steve Nelson ("Tapes 2") began crafting a sound that harked back to the Pixies and Pavement and also recalled more contemporary bands like the Shins. Nelson left the band, with drummer Karl Schweitz becoming the band's second "Tapes"; this lineup recorded the Tapes 'n Tapes EP in early 2004, recording in a cabin in Wisconsin. After the EP's release, Tapes 'n Tapes played a string of gigs with I Am the World Trade Center, the Streets, Metric, and the Futureheads.

A Christmas Tale (Arnaud Desplechin, 2008)

The Vuillard family gathers: Junon and Abel, a daughter Elizabeth and her son Paul, Henri and a girlfriend, Ivan, his wife Sylvia and their young sons, and cousin Simon. Six years before, Elizabeth paid Henri's debts and demanded he never see her again or visit their parents' home. Paul, at 16, has mental problems and faces a clinical exam. Junon learns she needs a bone marrow transplant if she's to live beyond a few months: thus the détente bringing all together. Two family members have compatible marrow, but the spats, fights, cruel words, drunken toasts, and somewhat civilized bad behavior threaten all; plus Junon may simply refuse treatment. Do we know ourselves?

Les amours imaginaires

Les amours imaginaires (Heartbeats)
Director : Xavier Dolan [2010]

It is hugely refreshing to see a film in which social and sexual fluidity is a given, and in which the attachments and rivalries of young love ring agonisingly and comically true. Dolan is a stylist too, and the film's vivid colours, off-kilter framing and retro soundtrack make for a rare and seductive thing: a film about young people made by someone young enough to care.

Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (Joe Berlinger,2000)

This video takes another look at the murders of three young boys in Robin Hood Falls, AR. Their deaths were the subject of a 1996 film entitled Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills. Many questions have been raised about the evidence against three young men who were convicted of the crime. Joe Berlinger, who co-produced the first film, returns to Robin Hood Hills to learn more about the investigation and to see how the small town is coming to terms with its loss.

Sous le Soleil de Satan (1987)

A slow, complex and involving tale of a French priest and his moral trials and tribulations, Under the Sun of Satan is adapted from the Georges Bernanos novel of the same name. Father Donissan (Gerard Depardieu) struggles to save the soul of the 16-year-old pregnant woman Mouchette (Sandrine Bonnaire) in this allegorical drama. She is the mistress of a married politician, but she carries the child of a poor nobleman. Mouchette shoots and kills the nobleman when he refuses to run away with her, and the emotionally tortured Donissan flagellates himself with a chain and despises his superior Menou-Serais (Maurice Pialot). This dramatic struggle of good versus evil took the Golden Palm Award for Best Film at the 1987 Cannes Festival. The selection was not without controversy, as the verbal protests of the audience led to an obscene gesture from the miffed director.

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (Joe Berlinger,1996)

Berlinger and Sinofsky's documentary of a gruesome triple murder in West Memphis, Arkansas and the subsequent trials of three suspects, takes a hard look at both the occult and the American justice system in 'small-town' America. Three teenagers are accused of this horrific crime of killing three children, supposedly as a result of involvement in Satanism. As in their previous documentary, things turn out to be more complex than initial appearances and this film presents the real-life courtroom drama to the viewer, as it unfolds.

Jon Langford & Skull Orchard – Old Devils (2010)

Class rage is something Jon Langford can practically do in his sleep by now; he’s been serving up smart, bitterly witty (or simply bitter) rants about the growing divide between the privileged and the powerless since the years before Thatcher and Reagan began unweaving our social safety nets. But who knows if he had any idea what the world would be like after eight years of George W. Bush? 2010′s Old Devils finds Jonboy sounding a lot more contemplative than usual, as if in the 21st Century he’s beginning to think civilization may have finally met its match. Langford doesn’t seem resigned on Old Devils, but it’s unusually subtle and thoughtful stuff from a man who often likes his music with the Waco Brothers or the Mekons to be full of force, and this album sure sounds like the work of a man less confident in the value of shouting than he was a few years ago.

Ruth

Ruth
Polaroid/Roman/Photo [1985]
(Angular Recording Corporation,2010)

Ruth's 'Polaroid/Roman/Photo' is one of the most extraordinary archival discoveries to resurface thanks to a groundswell of vintage '80s coldwave/darkwave/synth-pop. Angular Records included it as part of their awesome 'Cold Waves & Minimal Electronics' compilation earlier in the year, and now give the full original album a well warranted reissue 25 years after the drop. The fact that the original only sold 50 copies back in 1985 means it exchanges hands for over L300 these days, which should tell you something about its cult status in the annals of underground synth pop. Parisian graphic artist and photographer, Thierry Müller, drew upon his inspirations from Eno to Neu, Kraftwerk and the Velvets to create seven tracks of darkly sexy French synth music, from the noirish, wiry collage of 'Thriller' to that unmistakable 'Polaroid/Roman/Photo', via a cover of Can's 'She Brings The Rain' and the Afrobeat-disco-spiked 'Mabelle' or the brilliantly odd 'Tu M'ennuies'.

Wil Bolton - Time Lapse

He has been producing melodic electronica and IDM under the name Cheju since 2004, blending warm synth tones, crunchy broken beats and layered atmospheric textures. Zazie Von Einem Anderen Stern

Zazie Von Einem Anderen Stern
Regen Tropfen
[Drifting Falling,2010]

Zazie Von Einem Anderen Stern is the solo project of Maike Zazie Matern. From a musical family, the classically trained Matern began playing at a young age and was inspired by her parents’ record collection which featured artists such as Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett. Her more recent influences include Arvo Part, Amiina, Peter Broderick, Max Richter, and Ólafur Arnalds.
Opening with a short piano intro, regen:tropfen passes like a daydream and the listener is compelled to give the album close attention, lest one should miss something. Unlike some of her neo-classical contemporaries, the artist chooses to employ vocals which alternate between Swedish and German on many of the tracks. When present, the vocals are sparse and seem to be used as another instrument rather than the tracks focal point.

I'm Not A Gun

I'm Not A Gun
Solace [City Centre Offices,2010]

The fifth album from John Tejada and Takeshi Nishamoto's duo, I'm Not A Gun, Solace feels like a pronounced refinement of their work to date on the project. These two have been collaborating for some twelve years now, and clearly as musicians they compliment one another perfectly - there's an easiness and fluency running through the likes of 'Big Steps' that doesn't come over night, and track after track finds the collaboration reaching new heights of synergy and purpose.

Kloster

Kloster
The Waves and Winds Still Know His Voice
[Washington Inc,2010]

The band Flying Saucer Attack once wrote "Home recording is re-inventing music". Mikael R Andreasen and his project "Kloster" (the Danish word for ”abbey” or ”monastery”) appear to be cementing that claim. Based out of his home studio "Blitzkrieg", Mikael spends his time creating musical thoughts with the help of friends who drop by. The atmosphere is relaxed, the music being something that brings people together in a creative expression.

Bus 174 (2002)

Documentary depicts what happened in Rio de Janeiro on June 12th 2000, when bus 174 was taken by an armed young man, threatening to shoot all the passengers. Transmitted live on all Brazilian TV networks, this shocking and tragic-ending event became one of violence's most shocking portraits, and one of the scariest examples of police incompetence and abuse in recent years.

Tokyo! (2008)

Directors Michel Gondry, Bong Joon-ho, and Leos Carax each direct a segment of this triptych feature about life in 21st century Tokyo. The saga begins with Gondry's segment, entitled "Interior Design," about a young couple who moves in with an old friend while attempting to establish themselves in Tokyo. Hiroko (Ayako Fujitani) and Akira (Ryo Kase) have just arrived in the city. They're eager to launch their careers, but first they'll have to find a place to stay. Though Hiroko's old friend Akemi (Ayumi Ito) opens her doors to the ambitious young couple, her boyfriend isn't exactly thrilled by the new living arrangement. As Akira takes his first steps toward becoming a filmmaker, the neon jungle beckons to Hiroko. Before long, Hiroko begins to experience a startling metamorphosis that instills her with a newfound sense of peace and purpose.

We Live In Public(2008)

Dig! director Ondi Timoner returns to the documentary scene with this look at the dot-com exploits and New York City art party escapades of Josh Harris, the man behind the legendary million-dollar millennium party "Quiet." The party, which took place at an abandoned loft manufacturing building on Lower Broadway, featured over 90 Japanese-hotel-style pods where artists lived, played, worked, and partied. With numerous mini-disco bars throughout and streaming cameras tucked in ever corner, it was the ultimate multi-media bash.

The Savings and Loan – Today I Need Light (2010)

Opening their offering with a smooth yet sombre, captivating string ensemble introduction, The Savings And Loan immediately evidence their sensitive, moving and beautiful if melancholic intentions. 'Swallow' then falls into a raw down-tempo song with Martin Donnelly's low Tom Smith (Editors) meets Tom Waits vocals sounded bare over an intricately picked solo nylon strung guitar accompaniment. The simplicity of 'Swallow' ads a raw guitar and vocal only number instantly offers the flavour of a sombre yet entrancing open mic act; the kind that, depressing as they might be, one can't help but be drawn into their sorrowful yet entrancing song.

The Bridge (Eric Steel, 2006)

People suffer largely unnoticed while the rest of the world goes about its business. This is a documentary exploration of the mythic beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge, the most popular suicide destination in the world, and those drawn by its call. Steel and his crew filmed the bridge during daylight hours from two separate locations for all of 2004, recording most of the two dozen deaths in that year (and preventing several others).

Death In June – Peaceful Snow / Lounge Corps (2010, 2CD)

It is their first studio release since 2008′s The Rule Of Thirds & marks a distinctive change in sound. Unlike the more Neofolk sounds of their most recent releases this album is completely piano led, under the moniker of ‘Totenkopf Torch Songs’. The ‘Lounge Corps’ part of the album is a selection of well known Death In June tracks such as ‘Rose Clouds Of Holocaust’ & ‘Fall Apart’ reworked in the style of this album & presented as an instrumental version.

Mister Lonely - Harmony Korine (2007)

When a Michael Jackson impersonator (Diego Luna) living in Paris falls for a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton) during a performance at a retirement home, the lovestruck pair retreats to a seaside castle in the Scottish highlands populated by a commune of reclusive impersonators. Earning a living can be a difficult endeavor in the City of Lights, and in order to make ends meet, one man has turned to mimicking the King of Pop. One day, while doing the moonwalk in an old folks home, Michael meets a beautiful Marilyn Monroe look-alike. When Marilyn suggests that Michael join her in traveling to the Scottish Highlands and move into a castle populated entirely by celebrity doppelgangers, the would-be gloved one readily accepts her invitation. Shortly after arriving at the castle, Michael and Marilyn find the commune preparing for their first-ever gala -- a lavish affair featuring appearances by Abe Lincoln, the Three Stooges, Buckwheat, Shirley Temple, Madonna, Sammy Davis Jr., and Charlie Chaplin.

The Cave Singers – No Witch (2011)

Given the rising popularity of meditative and folky indie acts in the early 2000s, forming a twangy folk trio was probably the least surprising move Derek Fudesco could have made. The former bassist and founding member of the successful indie rock group Pretty Girls Make Graves picked up an acoustic guitar and formed the Cave Singers following PGMG's demise in January 2007, teaming up with vocalist Pete Quirk (formerly of Hint Hint) and drummer Marty Lund (formerly of Cobra High).

Le Bonheur- Agnes Varda (1965)

Le Bonheur was French director Agnes Varda's first color film. To critics who carped that her choice of hues was not "realistic", she responded that she was choosing the hues that were best suited psychologically to her story. The film's protagonist is a young, married carpenter (Jean-Claude Drouot). He takes a mistress (Marie-France Boyer), assuming that he can be equally in love with both his wife and the new woman in his life. When the wife drowns, the mistress quietly takes her place. This plot twist is remains a subject of debate amongst Varda's admirers.

The Coral – Butterfly House: Acoustic (2010)

It’s been an excellent year by all accounts for The Coral who have been rejuvenated by the release earlier in the year of Butterfly House, arguably their best, most complete album yet.
Following an amazing reaction to the band’s acoustic shows they have decided to produce an acoustic version of the album. It was recorded in one day and according to frontman James Skelly ”Everyone liked the acoustic gigs so much they asked us to record the tracks acoustically. We record and mixed the album in one day. Everything is live. The songs stand up really well and the album shows them in their raw form”.

Mauvais Sang- Leos Carax(1986)

Zahvaljujuci drugaru Horroru i filmu Lovers on the Bridge, ovaj film je dobio drugu sansu i ovog puta me potpuno oduvao... a Juliette Binoche i magicni Denis Lavant su stvarno neponovljiva kombinacija!

This critically acclaimed French drama blends film noir and science fiction elements in a story about a strange and deadly plague. A sexually transmitted disease called STBO is sweeping the country; it's spread by having sex without emotional involvement, and most of its victims are teenagers who make love out of curiosity rather than commitment. While a serum that can treat the disease has been formulated, it's been locked away in an inaccessible government building, and most of those suffering can't get at it. A woman known as "The American" (Carroll Brooks) has hired Marc (Michel Piccoli), who is deep in debt and desperate for cash, to steal the drug; Marc enlists the aid of Alex (Denis Lavant), the teenage son of one of his close friends, to help pull off the robbery. Alex is in love with Lise (Julie Delpy), a girl his age that he's been involved with, but he finds himself attracted to Anna (Juliette Binoche), Marc's younger lover who is determined to stand by her man. Mauvais Sang received the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and the International Fantasy Film Award at the Fantasporto Film Festival.

William Elliott Whitmore & Jenny Hoyston - Hallways of Always (2006)

Jenny Hoysten from the arty post-punk outfit Erase Errata and gothic Americana folk-bluesman William Whitmore might seem unlikely musical bedmates. However, this collaboration shows them to be surprisingly compatible. Maybe it should not be so unexpected, since they were once roommates. The music on Hallways of Always favors Whitmore's rustic sound, but the disc isn't without modern touches.

Ariel's Pink Haunted Graffiti - Round and Round [4AD]

Singl godine sa albuma godine...

The lo-fi weirdo performs with his band in this psych-damaged clip

While they toured together recently, Flaming Lips leader Wayne Coyne filmed a video on his iPhone for Ariel Pink's year-end contender "Round and Round" starring Pink and his band Haunted Graffiti. It's a performance video but, of course, it's not just any performance video. The clip starts with Pink's toes in "the breast milk of 30 women" (according to Coyne) and the footage was "noised up" by Flaming Lips visual guru George Salisbury. The result is impressively psychedelic.

DVD - Dir. by Ericka Beckman
Soul Jazz Records [2010]

'135 grand street, new york, 1979' is history. it includes the only known footage of the theoretical girls, the static and a number of other no wave bands of the period. this is a film about bands filled with painters, filmmakers, actors - and occasionally musicians - thriving and thrashing in the pulsating, vibrant post-punk world of new york where high art met low culture, where glenn branca, rhys chatham, wharton tiers, taro suzuki and the others featured here made the connections between john cage and joey ramone, between the questioning of art and ? and the mysterians.
Ericka Beckman’s film captures the driving energy and posturing of early No Wave bands’ performing live in a sparse downtown loft. Featured bands include Theoretical Girls, UT, A Band, Rhys Chatham, Chinese Puzzle, The Static, Morales, Youth in Asia, Morales, Steven Piccolo and Jill Kroesen.
