Ethan Johns & The Black Eyed Dogs – Silver Liner (2015)

Having released his debut album in 2012, following up with the conceptual, Adams-produced The Reckoning, Silver Liner is now his third, recorded live with a core band consisting of bassist Nick Pino, drummer (and producer) Jeremy Stacey and pedal steel legend BJ Cole and put down over the space of just ten days. All self-penned material, it embraces both homegrown folk and American the influences often clearly out in the open, case in point being the title track which (featuring Gillian Welch on backing) even Neil Young might be persuaded it was one of his own forgotten tracks from the After The Goldrush-era archives, right down to whiny vocal and trademark fiery guitar solo.

John Renbourn – The Attic Tapes (2015)

Like many of his peers who first came to fame with the British folk music revival of the ’60s, the sorely-missed John Renbourn’s legacy casts a long shadow over much of what came thereafter. Arguably best known for his contributions to Pentangle and his duo work with the late Bert Jansch, he was nevertheless remarkably eclectic in his other choices of collaborators, who were as likely to be from a jazz, world, R&B or early (medieval and renaissance) classical background as folk. None of this ever stopped him working as a solo artist and The Attic Tapes, the recently-released compilation of some of John’s early recordings (both solo and collaboratively) represents, in his own words, “what was happening to me at the time and a reflection of the general scene”.

JEFF The Brotherhood – Global Chakra Rhythms (2015)

Wasted on the Dream , the band’s eighth studio album, was supposed to be their big major label hit, but after massive delays and mismanagement, it had ended up in the Warner Bros. dust bin and the brothers Orrall were left to release the record on their own label, Infinity Cat. Global Chakra Rhythms is everything that Wasted on the Dream is not. The duo who, on earlier albums, had always flirted with the ideas of droning stoner rock before flipping back to catchy garage punk anthems, finally lets loose and gives in to their baser desires.

Gwenno - Y Dydd Olaf

Gwenno - Y Dydd Olaf  (Heavenly,2015)

“Her solo debut channels Broadcast and Boards Of Canada via fragrant kosmische grooves as she sings a socialist manifesto…"
As a member of girl group throwbacks The Pipettes, Gwenno Saunders pulled shapes and made the indie boys swoon with bundles of flirty, razor-tongued sass and polka dot, ’60s, pop joy. Now singing in Welsh to a lush, swirling, electro backdrop, her solo debut Y Dydd Olaf marks a radical change.

Buffy Sainte-Marie – Many a Mile (1965, Remastered 2015)

In 1964, Buffy Sainte-Marie left Greenwich Village to attend a pow wow in Saskatchewan, which deepened her passion for Native American music.
This made its presence felt in her vocal inflections, subject matter and heightened rhythm-driven elements after she signed to Vanguard and released her debut album. The following year, she released her second album, Many a Mile, named after the title track by Patrick Sky.
The set featured several Child Ballads, drawn from the songs from England, Scotland and their American variants, collected by Francis James Child in the second half of the 19th century.

Drab Majesty – Careless – (2015)

Currently the drummer for Los Angeles lo-fi rock ensemble Marriages and having honed an unorthodox home recording style, Deb sources his sounds from a repository of “mid-fi” synthesizers and other lesser-quality instruments. Influences range from the virtuosic arpeggiated guitar work of Felt’s Maurice Deebank and the grittier pop progressions of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry’s Chris Reed as well as Steve Severin from Siouxsie and The Banshees.   Following the release of his debut cassette EP, “UNARIAN DANCES”, he also shared a split 12″ with synth pop forefathers, Eleven Pond.  During the Spring of 2015, Drab Majesty signed with Dais Records and released his first single, Unknown to the I, as a introduction for his first initial foray into the album format, romantically titled Careless.

Julia Kent

Music video for "Invitation to the Voyage," by Julia Kent, from the album "Asperities," to be released 30 October 2015 on the Leaf Label

Asperities is the fourth solo album by acclaimed Canadian cellist Julia Kent. As the title suggests, this is a record born of conflict: internal, personal and global. Universal themes. The build of pressure and the threat of violent release. Modern guilt. Modern fears.

The Mongrelettes – The Mongrelettes (2015)

THE MONGRELETTES are an almost-all-female garage band, based in Athens-GR, active since 09. Their sound and compositions are mostly influenced by 60s punk-psych, Greek and French 60s pop and other revivals of garage/psych sounds. They have played along great bands in the garage/psychedelic genre, both local and international. The first 7″ EP vinyl was released from Greek FuzzOverdose records.

Boogarins – Manual (2015)

The sophomore studio long player from the Brazilian psych-pop outfit led by longtime friends Fernando “Dino” Almeida and Benke Ferraz, Manual continues to mine classic ’60s Tropicalia and liquid-light show neo-psychedelia, but with a more contemporary flair. What’s changed since 2013’s excellent As Plantas Que Curam is that the band is no longer just Almeida and Ferraz conjuring up the ghost of Os Mutantes in their pieced-together basement studio.

Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts – Manhattan – (2015)

“The best lyricist working in the US today.” – Jarvis Cocker

Manhattan is Jeffrey Lewis’s seventh studio album for Rough Trade and his first since 2011’s ‘A Turn In The Dream-Songs’.  His band is called Los Bolts and includes his regular players Heather Wagner (drums) and bassist Caitlin Gray (Hooray For The Riff-Raff). The album’s artwork features Jeff’s illustrations throughout.
‘Manhattan’ was mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Phosphorescent, War On Drugs) and recorded by Brian Speaker.

130701 record label mixtape : Pioneers of Post Classical
"130701 - the sub-label of Brighton based imprint FatCat , can arguably lay the claim to having paved the way for the current generation of artists blurring the boundaries between classical composition and electronic aesthetics… Signing artists such as Max Richter, Jóhan Jóhannsson, Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran, the label established a flawless roster of artists…" The mixtape features one track lifted from each of the imprint's albums, running in chronological order from the first to the latest release.

Girls Names – Arms Around a Vision (2015)

After throwing their fans for a loop by shifting their outlook from their first album’s bright noise pop to their second’s gloomy post-punk, Girls Names‘ third album doubles down on the somberness and despair, strips off a layer of studio gloss, and adds some tricky bits to the arrangements. Arms Around a Vision has a grittier feel and tougher sound, with jagged guitars and loud drums, while at the same time the band shows a more nuanced way of arranging the songs. The dynamic shifts within the songs are bracing, the differences in tone from song to song keep listeners guessing, and the subtleties in the arrangements are a definite step forward.

Lee Harvey Osmond – Beautiful Scars (2015)

Hamilton, ON blues-rock mainstay Tom Wilson has captivated Canadian music fans with his work in Junkhouse and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, though at the moment, he’s switched his focus back to his Lee Harvey Osmond project.Produced by Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) at his Toronto studio, the new record largely places emphasis on Wilson’s singing. A press release describes his voice as “a warm hand to the forehead, an arm on the arm of the stricken, a comforting growl at the heart of a screaming world.” Despite the prominence of Wilson’s baritone croons, there’s also noteworthy backing instrumentation that comes in the form of “swooning horns” and “guitars that bob and weave.” Wilson leads the listener on a sonic journey.

Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness (Domino,2015)

Have You In My Wilderness is Julia Holter’s most intimate album yet, a collection of radiant ballads. Her follow-up to 2013’s widely celebrated Loud City Song explores love, trust, and power in human relationships. While love songs are familiar fodder in pop music, Holter manages to stay fascinatingly oblique and enigmatic on her new album.

John Grant - Grey Tickles, Black Pressure (Bella Union,2015)

US musician John Grant has produced two of the most acclaimed albums of recent years in 2010’s Queen of Denmark and 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts. With his knack for pendulous, lush Seventies melodies and droll lyrical references to the mundane, it wasn’t hard to hear why.
His third album, Grey Tickles, Black Pressure is, at first, a harder sell: angrier, weirder, more experimental, the blousy ballads fight for elbow-room with spiky electro numbers. Grant delivers some songs in his resonant vibrato, others in an Iggy Pop growl that makes him sound like a shrubland sex pest.

Hior Chronik - Taking the Veil (Kitchen,2015)

Hior ChronikLucky is the artist whose work appears on the Kitchen. imprint. The latest beneficiary of the label’s attention is Athens-born and current Berlin resident Hior Chronik, who began producing his expressive ambient-styled material a mere seven years ago. Taking the Veil is not, however, his first appearance on the label; instead, it’s the follow-up to 2012’s Vanishing Mirror, which he and classical pianist Zinovia Arvanitidi issued under the Pill-Oh name. The visual narrative is rooted in the idea of young women whose inner thoughts and imagination are concealed from view — veiled, as it were — which in turn makes the women grow enigmatic and mysterious to those around them.

Nils Frahm - Music for the Motion Picture Victoria (2015)

Composer and pianist Nils Frahm will release a soundtrack on Erased Tapes next month.
Set in Berlin and shot in one take, Victoria follows a Spanish girl who gets involved in a heist when she meets four local guys outside a techno club. The film won the award for cinematography at the Berlinale Film Festival and picked up seven nominations, including one for best soundtrack, at the Deutscher Filmpreis.

Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm - Loon (Erased Tapes,2015)

Nils FrahmBoth Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds create ambient environments with a large instrumental palette and give distinct nods to Brian Eno, but they do so from different vantage points. On Frahm’s albums, the individual tracks tend to inhabit different scenery, characters, and textures, yet are bound together with a shared focus and love of keyboards.
Arnalds’ impressionistic pieces work together cohesively within the framework of an album and usually employ a fuller orchestra. Even though Frahm is from Germany and Arnalds is native to Iceland, it almost seems like the two composers could be long lost brothers.

Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra

 Into Forever (2015)

Matthew HalsallWith last year’s Gondwana Orchestra album When the World Was One, northern trumpeter and composer Matthew Halsall eloquently blended the tranquil tone-poetry of Alice Coltrane and the jazz intensity of her husband, John, with sounds of a kindred spirit from Japan and the east.

Girl Band – Holding Hands with Jamie (2015)

A lot of bands blend drastically disparate influences, but few sound like the blender, too. Dublin four-piece Girl Band is one such act, slicing up parts of everything from no wave to techno, using guitar and drums like power tools as much as instruments. But that implies that they’re consciously taking influence from bands like Big Black, Throbbing Gristle, James Chance and the Contortions, Talking Heads, and The Chemical Brothers, while in interviews, they’ve denied influences (either things they don’t know or don’t like) as often or more than noting them. There’s an autodidactic mania to the band’s debut, Holding Hands with Jamie, the sound of four semi-feral young men who figured out their own way to make enough noise to alternately cover up and communicate the fact that they’re frustrated, self-deprecating, laughing at society, and having panic attacks — if not worse.

Sexwitch – Sexwitch (2015)

As Bat for Lashes, Natasha Khan creates in a form of herself that’s at home in dreams. Sometimes those dreams are nightmares, but they’re always surreal visions that manifest in the mind. With her new, mysterious band, Sexwitch, she takes two steps closer to the other side of the aisle and into the body. On the project’s self-titled debut, Khan immerses herself in a worldly, history-enamored idea of body music, one specifically meant to come out at night, the time when the supposed nefarious things come alive – both sex and witches.
Sexwitch is a passionately curious study of the relationship between rhythm and human physiology.

RA – Scandinavia (2015)

The past few years, 2014 especially, saw the renewal and reinvention of the post punk genre.
The reunions of bands like the Pop Group and the creativity of newcomers like Psychic Teens have paved the way for plenty of new blood. One might expect a genre facing such a renaissance to quickly become over-saturated, and while the jury is still out on whether that will happen, it doesn’t seem to have happened yet. Swedish punk group RA, who describe their sound as “nordic-noir,” may be one of many bands taking on the style, but their debut full length Scandinavia still manages to make a splash.
RA’s brand of punk is dark, it’s weird, and disjointed, which is exactly what post punk bands should be aiming for if they want to stand out.
