Hookworms – The Hum (2014)

Hookworms‘ balls-out, no nonsense approach to music is very much a breath of fresh air in an increasingly tame and polished music industry. The Leeds-based five piece are known only as JN, JW, MB, MJ and SS in order to ensure a focus on the music itself, rather than any personalities within the band. Not that the music needs any attention drawing to it – 2013’s Pearl Mystic mercilessly battered you around the head in a haze of guitars and largely indecipherable, piercing vocals. Though indisputedly a part of the psych revival of recent years, Hookworms occupy their very own niche, combining elements of shoegaze and noise with the DIY elements of hardcore and garage rock.

The Wonders (Alice Rohrwacher, 2014)

Alice Rohrwacher, the 31-year-old Italian filmmaker, has come to Cannes with a mesmerising coming-of-age tale: small and sweet in every good way, but alive with a power that seems to surge up from deep beneath its sun-roughened landscape.
Like Rohrwacher’s debut feature, Corpo Celeste, which played here in the Directors’ Fortnight programme three years ago, the film is heavily inspired by the director’s own childhood in the countryside between Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany. It centres on a German-Italian family of bee-keepers, and particularly 12-year-old Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu), the eldest of four sisters and the notional heiress to this traditional and increasingly rare way of life.

The Popguns – Pop Fiction (2014)

... Album of the month ...

The Popguns‘ first album after 20 years away from the recording studio shows no signs of rust; if anything, Pop Fiction sounds like it could have been released during the band’s heyday in the early ’90s and been considered another in a series of great noisy, jangly indie pop gems. Featuring the powerfully simple vocals of Wendy Pickles, some loud guitars, lots of melancholy, and hooks sharp enough to cut through the years, the album is grown folks’ indie pop of the highest caliber. Produced with care by the bandmembers themselves, the album sounds airlifted out of the past but not stuck in it, despite referencing one of their early classics, “Waiting for the Winter,” on “Still Waiting for the Winter.”

Warm Graves – Ships Will Come (2014)

Warm Graves are a three-piece Sci-Fi-delic-Rockband whose members, originally from the US, Italy and Germany, came together in Leipzig in 2012. With their debut “Ships will come”, Warm Graves present a concept album that is in terms of content closely related to dystopic Sci-Fi literature. The band manages to create a surreal cosmos with a somnambulistic atmosphere that is supported by impulsive, repetitive rhythms while a distant choir takes over the role of the lead vocals.

Bracken – Exist / Resist (2014)

... Karmacoma ...

As the two core members of experimental, electro-post rock outfit Hood, brothers Chris and Richard Adams led a fascinating trail of textured, beat-addled vibes that inspired uncountable producers who tried and failed to replicate Hood’s signature sound, with effusively watered-down results. Yet even in Hood’s various states of hiatus and innumerable lineup changes with only the brothers Adams being the constant, the one thing you could count on was the Adams’ occasional output of intricate, heartfelt songs.

Johnny Aries – Unbloomed (2014)

... This grave is my bed tonight ...
Wearing your The Smiths influences on your sleeve can be a tricky thing for a band to pull off. Irrespective of the quality of the songs themselves, you never know if you’re going to catch a Morrissey acolyte in an accepting or dismissive mood (so mercurial!). But when it came to my first few listens to Unbloomed, the new LP from Johnny Aries (also of The Drums), it was love at first listen.

Till det som är vackert( Lisa Langseth, 2009)

Katarina is 20 years old. With a troubled past in a dreary suburb, her life seems to be already set in stone - until she discovers music. Everything changes when she hears a performance of Mozart's Requiem at the Gothenburg Concert Hall that sends her reeling and opens up a beautiful new world. She feels that she has to change her life and get as far away from her ugly reality as possible. But the path she has to follow proves a treacherous one, filled with lies, betrayal and a dangerous liaison with the married conductor Adam. Yet Katarina is ready to do anything to gain her new identity.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle (Peter Yates, 1973)

After his last crime has him looking at a long prison sentence for repeat offenses, a low level Boston gangster decides to snitch on his friends to avoid jail time.

Darling (John Schlesinger, 1965)

London has never seemed so decadent and immoral as in John Schlesinger’s “Darling,” a transitional film of the mid-1960s, released after the height of the Kitchen Sink Realism School (“Look Back in Anger,” “Room at the Top,” “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning”) and around the time of the new movies about swinging London, beginning with the Beatles movies like “Help.”
As written by Frederic Raphael (based on his story) and directed by Schlesinger (who also contributed to the story with producer Joseph Janni), this movie couldn’t have been made in the 1950s due to censorship problems in depicting sexual promiscuity, abortion, and homosexuality. However, decades on, the film looks tame, a bit shallow-and too much of an allegory about a life devoid of any values or morals.
