extracting a bullet from his brother's arm, Alex (Konstantin Lavroneko)

Vozvrashchenie (Andrey Zvyagintsev, 2003)
Labelled as heir to Tarkovskii, Andrei Zviagintsev has recently risen to fame
as the winner of two Golden Lion Awards of the 2003 Venice IFF. Zviagintsev
never trained as a director, but is an actor by profession; and this is debut
film. Nevertheless, the critics’ and audience responses unanimously labelled
Zviagintsev the new Tarkovskii, and compared the film The Return with Ivan’s
Childhood, which had won the Golden Lion in 1962, largely because of the
religious symbolism of the film and the construction of frames that imitate the
compositions of renaissance depictions of Christ.

Force Majeure (Ruben Östlund, 2014)
A critical favorite and word-of-mouth sensation at this year's Cannes
Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this
wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a
model Swedish family-handsome businessman Tomas, his willowy wife Ebba
and their two blond, pre-teen children-on a skiing holiday in the French
Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but, during
lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche turns everything upside
down.

The Wonders (Alice Rohrwacher, 2014)
Alice Rohrwacher, the 31-year-old Italian filmmaker, has come to Cannes
with a mesmerising coming-of-age tale: small and sweet in every good way,
but alive with a power that seems to surge up from deep beneath its
sun-roughened landscape.
Like Rohrwacher’s debut feature, Corpo Celeste, which played here in the
Directors’ Fortnight programme three years ago, the film
is heavily inspired by the director’s own childhood in the countryside
between Umbria, Lazio and Tuscany. It centres on a German-Italian family of
bee-keepers, and particularly 12-year-old Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu),
the eldest of four sisters and the notional heiress to this traditional and
increasingly rare way of life.

Darling (John Schlesinger, 1965)
London has never seemed so decadent and
immoral as in John Schlesinger’s “Darling,” a transitional film of the
mid-1960s, released after the height of the Kitchen Sink Realism School
(“Look Back in Anger,” “Room at the Top,” “Saturday Night and Sunday
Morning”) and around the time of the new movies about swinging London,
beginning with the Beatles movies like “Help.”
As written by Frederic Raphael (based on his story) and directed by
Schlesinger (who also contributed to the story with producer Joseph
Janni), this movie couldn’t have been made in the 1950s due to
censorship problems in depicting sexual promiscuity, abortion, and
homosexuality. However, decades on, the film looks tame, a bit
shallow-and too much of an allegory about a life devoid of any values or
morals.
