John Vanderslice – Dagger Beach (2013) & Diamond Dog (2013)

Jenny Hval – Innocence Is Kinky (2013)

Fury (Fritz Lang, 1936)

Fritz Lang's first American film is a vigorous and perceptive indictment of mob law, starring Spencer Tracy and Sylvia Sidney. Katherine (Sidney) leaves her boyfriend, Joe Wilson (Tracy), behind in their Midwestern hometown when she takes a job in another city. Joe is a decent, hard-working soul, who wants to save up to buy a gas station and looks forward to the future when he and Katherine can get married. A year later, Joe is traveling to meet Katherine so that they can be married. Driving through a small town, Joe is stopped by a deputy sheriff waving a shotgun. Apparently there has been a kidnapping, and the fact that Joe has peanuts in his pocket circumstantially incriminates him in the crime.

Deerhunter – Monomania (2013)

...  Z  L  O ...
Monomania finds the group recalling its scrappy punk aesthetic; a perfect nocturnal garage rock album full of the layered and hazy vintage guitar sounds that define them.
On “Monomania”, Deerhunter have replaced the relatively straight lines of Halcyon Digest with something altogether more thorny. When it gets to the final third of the song, in which Bradford Cox simply intones the title over and over, there’s a venom there, a feeling of genuine malice rising, a sense of arrival in a much darker place than before. This is Deerhunter digging hard into their punk roots, dragging their sound through the mud, then coming out the other side with dirty, smiling faces.

Big Harp – Chain Letters (2013)

 ...Cista Americana...
Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney (The Good Life, Bright Eyes, She & Him) formed Big Harp in December 2010, after a three-year whirlwind that saw the two meet, have a baby, move halfway across the country, get married, move halfway across the country again, and have another baby. When the dust settled, they holed up in Stefanie’s parents’ spare bedroom, practiced for a week, and recorded their debut album White Hat, a collection of dusty, low-key folk-rock laced with subtle irony and dark humor.

Little Tybee – For Distant Viewing (2013)

 ... CISTA RADOST ...
From the moment the violin swept in on the title track of Little Tybee’s third album, For Distant Viewing, we knew it was something we were about to fall in love with. After opening with some delightful, occasional tropical sounding, jazzy folk sounds, we are treated to four minutes of swooshing instrumentalism, laced with gentle prog-rock sensibilities on “Fantastic Planet”. “Herman” drips with aquatic, almost sonar style elements that complement the rich string orchestration before, seemingly out of no-where, dropping in a surprising moment of grinding reverb. It is as unexpected as it is perfect, but it remains the only fleeting moment of rough with the otherwise very smooth.

Van Dyke Parks – Super Chief: Music For The Silver Screen (2013)

A Place to Bury Strangers- Strange Moon

The Apartments – Seven Songs (Radio Sessions) (2013)

Julia (2008) , Erick Zoncka

Tilda Swinton stars in director Erick Zonca's drama about a 40-year-old alcoholic who, in a rare moment of sobriety, sees where her life is headed and makes one last-ditch attempt to steer herself away from the disastrous path that she has been locked on for as far back as she can remember. Julia may be manipulative, notoriously untrustworthy, and completely incapable of uttering any word that isn't an outright lie, but somehow -- perhaps due to sheer charisma -- this statuesque deceiver has always managed to get by. But Julia has been hardened by too many vodkas and too many one-night stands, and lately the lonely life of drifting from job to job in her 1979 Chrysler New Yorker has left her wanting something more. While her old boyfriend Mitch occasionally tries to break through Julia's haze, lately she has surrendered herself to the fact that she is simply one of life's losers. As her finances begin to run short and panic begins to set in, a desperate Julia turns to crime but is forced to go on the run with a young boy named Tom after her plan falls hopelessly apart.

Wampire - Curiosity

Wampire
"Curiosity" (Polyvinyl,2013)

Curiosity succeeds in arousing many of Wampire’s influences ranging from Kraftwerk to Madness to The Strokes to contemporary counterparts like Tennis, but the vast influences and ventures into multiple genres remains framed within their cohesive idiosyncrasy. The album is pleasingly disperse but at the same time eminently catchy and most importantly, it is thoroughly fun.

Do Kids Like Radiohead? - "Paranoid Android"

The Lady from Shanghai (Orson Welles ,1947)

The Lady From Shanghai, a complex, involving puzzle-within-a-puzzle mystery story, is a showcase for Orson Welles, showing his singular talents and sensibilities as few other films have. The story is superficially simple: a seaman Michael O'Hara (Welles) is hired as a crew member on the yacht of the wealthy Banister (Everett Sloane). His beautiful but mysterious wife Elsa (Rita Hayworth) has met O'Hara earlier, when he saved her from a mugging. What ensues is a complicated and bizarre pattern of deception, fraud and murder, with O'Hara finding himself implicated in a murder, despite his innocence. The film is best remembered for its final sequence when the plot comes to a literally smashing climax in the famous "hall of mirrors" sequence, with Elsa and Banister shooting it out amidst shards of shattering glass.

They Live by Night (Nicholas Ray, 1948)

"This boy...and this girl...were never properly introduced to the world we live in." With this superimposed opening title, director Nicholas Ray inaugurates his first feature, They Live by Night. Farley Granger and Cathy O'Donnell play a "Bonnie and Clyde"-type fugitive couple, who in trying to escape their past are hell-bent down the road to Doom. Despite their criminal activities, Bowie (Granger) and Keechie (O'Donnell) are hopelessly naïve, fabricating their own idyllic dream world as the authorities close in. The entrapment -- both actual and symbolic -- of the young misfit couple can now be seen as a precursor to the dilemma facing James Dean in Ray's 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause.

Cape Fear (1962) ,J. Lee Thompson

After an eight-year prison term for rape and assault, Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) is set free. Immediately making a beeline to Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), the former prosecutor responsible for Cady's conviction, Cady laconically informs Sam that he intends to "pay back" the attorney for his years behind bars. Conducting a meticulous campaign of terror, Cady is careful to stay within the law. Sam, realizing that Cady intends to wreak vengeance by raping the attorney's wife (Polly Bergen) and daughter (Lori Martin), tries to put the ex-criminal behind bars, but has no grounds to do so. Chief Dutton (Martin Balsam) tries to help Sam with a few strong-arm tactics, but succeeds only in having the courts take Cady's side in the matter. Things come to a head when Sam moves his family to the "safety" of a remote houseboat on Cape Fear river. Cady shows up unannounced and is about to ravage Bowden's wife and daughter and when Sam turns the tables.

September (1987) , Woody Allen

A weekend stay at a Vermont summer house provides glimpses into the lives of six unhappy people, plagued by unrequited feelings, thoughts and desires. Mia Farrow plays Lane, a troubled woman who hides from a terrible childhood memory. She's in love with Peter (Sam Waterston), who is tempted by Stephanie (Dianne Wiest), her good friend. As the summer days come to a close, resentments and anger come to the surface, many of them related to Lane's relationship with her actress mother (Elaine Stritch).

Nedelja Vece...

Cabaret (1972) , Bob Fosse

Originally a 1966 Broadway musical, this groundbreaking Bob Fosse musical was in turn based on Christopher Isherwood's Goodbye to Berlin, previously dramatized for stage and screen as I Am a Camera with Julie Harris as Sally Bowles. Fosse uses the decadent and vulgar cabaret as a mirror image of German society sliding toward the Nazis, and this intertwining of entertainment with social history marked a new step forward for the movie musical.

Laura (1944) , Otto Preminger

This adaptation of Vera Caspary's suspense novel was begun by director Rouben Mamoulien and cinematographer Lucien Ballard, but thanks to a complex series of backstage intrigues and hostilities, the film was ultimately credited to director Otto Preminger and cameraman Joseph LaShelle (who won an Oscar for his efforts). At the outset of the film, it is established that the title character, Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), has been murdered.

Shuggie Otis-Inspiration Information(1973-2013)

Released to an apathetic audience and minimal sales in 1974, Inspiration Information has since gained cachet as a lost soul classic. It ultimately was Shuggie Otis’– son of legendary rock and roll band leader Johnny– final album of a sadly short three disc span. Despite a high profile 2001 reissue that quickly went out of print, little has been heard from him since.
This deluxe double disc combines the original nine track album with four previously unavailable rarities and a second platter called Wings of Love of finished odds and ends—most quite good– intended for its follow-up, primarily recorded from 1976-’80. Otis was only 21 when he released Inspiration and he played all the instruments which only adds to its lofty reputation. But listening to this half vocal/half instrumental set now doesn’t make a case as the great lost soul gem it’s touted to be, especially coming from an era that yielded similar and much better work from Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes and particularly Stevie Wonder.

Meat Puppets – Rat Farm (2013)

According to Curt, Rat Farm is an attempt to keep things simple and straight, and he made a concerted effort to write in a more restrained manner in order to allow the songs to “stand on their own”. This approach is in evidence right from the off with the title track. It may well skip across genres on a moment’s notice, switching from a grunge intro to a country twang, and then adopting ska for the verses, but there’s a distinct focus at play that serves only the song. Built around a stunning chorus, it is carefully crafted with a directness that ensures immediacy.
The country element to Meat Puppets’ sound makes itself known throughout, but it is the presiding force on later tracks Waiting and Time And Money. Both have a distinct R.E.M. flavour to them, but it is the gorgeous country stroll of Time And Money that it is possible to hear the influence that the band had on the likes of Blind Melon, Paw, and even latter day Screaming Trees. Kirkland’s vocals are particularly striking, they’ve matured kindly into a warm drawl that hangs in the air like crop dust caught in a sunbeam.

White Fence – Cyclops Reap (2013)

One of the leading stalwarts of San Francisco's crazy-busy music scene, standing proudly next to the prolific figures of Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin and John Dwyer, is Mr. Tim Presley a.k.a. White Fence. The soft, creeping psychadelia of Presley's music (which isn't afraid of jumping out of the box, right at the listener) is becoming more and more distinctive and defined by him thanks to his amazing work rate over the last couple of years. Like Segall, he isn't deterred at the prospect of putting out more than one release a year (the two collaborated on the wonderful Hair LP) and almost certainly isn't stricken with writer's block. In a press release for his latest creation, Cyclops Reap, Presley gave some insight into his madcap creative process: "After the death of my father in 2008 I started writing and recording non-stop. I can't say it was directly because of that trauma, but I think deep down it might have much to do about it."

Kurt Vile – Wakin on a Pretty Daze (2013)

... Uff, najbolji do sada...
...Album Of The Month...

Kurt Vile is slowly, quietly becoming one of the great American guitarists and songwriters, of our time. This 69-minute double album is comprised of sweeping, expansive songs that are both very intimate and conversational. Wakin On A Pretty Daze is a timeless record that would have sounded great 30 years ago, sounds great today, and will still sound great in another 30 years’ from now.
Beautifully produced by John Agnello, the record is filled with hazy, swooning guitar lines and dreamy, beatific, and occasionally sardonic vocals. It is summed up by the staggeringly gorgeous 9-minute opener, Wakin On A Pretty Day. The song is also the first video, directed by Jonathan Demme in the spirit of his landmark Springsteen video “Streets OfPhiladelphia.”

Dawes – Stories Don’t End (2013)

On Stories Don’t End, Dawes’ highly-anticipated third album, the bulk of Goldsmith’s ruminations and recriminations have to do with matters of the heart, making it a kind of concept album about the distance between the ideals of love and the stark reality of modern relationships. By the time the gentle strains of “Just Beneath The Surface (Reprise)” fade out, it feels like this particular love affair has run its course simply because there is nothing left for the narrator to explore.
Such earnestness is what Dawes fans bank on, of course. It’s hard to deny the results when they swing for the cheap seats, as they do on sweeping, dramatic ballads like the title track and “Something In Common.” If some of the metaphors and similes are strained, if Goldsmith’s buried emotions sometimes come to the surface a bit clumsily, it’s all forgivable. After all, in an era when bands  bury their vocals in the mix and wear their nonchalance as a badge of honor, it’s refreshing to see a band whose worst musical sin is maybe trying a bit too hard to say just what they want to say.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) , Joel Coen

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen concocted this stylish screwball comedic amalgam of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. Tim Robbins stars as Norville Barnes, a dull-wit from Muncie, Indiana who wrangles a job with the big Hudsucker Industries. He has a singular idea for a new children's toy that he wants to present to corporate executive Sidney J. Mussberger (Paul Newman). As he makes his way up to Mussberger's office, the company president Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) is on his way down -- through the window of the forty-fourth floor boardroom! Hudsucker's death sets off a panic that Mussberger sees as an opportunity for taking over the company -- by installing a total incompetent in Hudsucker's place and devaluing the stock. When Barnes stumbles into Mussberger's office, Mussberger sees his pigeon and appoints Barnes as the new company president. The only problem is that the new product Barnes proposes for the company, the Hula Hoop, turns out to be a tremendous success, and Mussberger has difficulty manipulating his new corporate president.

The Black Angels – Indigo Meadow (2013)

 ... Morrison Hotel ...
Over the past few years The Black Angels have emerged as the patriarchs and greatest ambassadors for modern psych rock. They’re from the psych-rich city of Austin, have been at it for longer than most and have used their stature to help along worthy up-and-comers. In 2008 they founded the Austin Psych Fest, the nation’s preeminent celebration of the genre. Their music is full of reverb and warble, acid trippiness, jangly tambourines and a certain menacing, droning heaviness all their own. It’s all gold to psych fans, but appealing to those not already immersed in the scene has been a different story. In 2010 they released Phosphene Dream, easily their most dynamic, energetic and focused album to date. It still droned, it was still heavy, it was still The Black Angels, but its tightened arrangements made it less intimidating and more appetizing on a broader scale. They even played the poppy, British Invasion-inspired single “Telephone” on Letterman.
