Agnes Obel – Philharmonic (2010)

Copenhagen-born, Berlin-based singer-songwriter Agnes Obel released her debut single, ‘Just So’. in Europe last year (under the name Obél). The track was promptly picked up in Germany for a Deutsche Telekom television advert, shooting her to fame in the country. She released her debut EP, ‘Riverside’, in the UK in May, and is set to re-issue it on ten-inch vinyl next month, ahead of her debut album, ‘Philharmonic’, on 4 Oct.
The formula for her songs is simple; gentle piano playing underpins her soft vocals, which build into intricate harmonies. Simple, and also effective.

Hurray for the Riff Raff – Hurray for the Riff Raff (2011)

Hurray For the Riff Raff is led by 23 year old Alynda Lee Segarra, a writer who shows maturity far beyond her tender years. The band trades in accordion, banjo and acoustic guitar led folk, rarely raising tempos above a laid back crawl. Lyrical concerns include love, loss and drugs like all the best folk.

Aimez-Vous Brahms?, Anatole Litvak (1961)

Based on the Francoise Sagan novel Aimez vous Brahms?, Goodbye Again stars Ingrid Bergman as Paula Tessier, a successful Parisian interior decorator (with a personal wardrobe by Christian Dior) and Yves Montand as her roving-eye lover, Roger Demarest. Worried that she'll be left in the lurch by the unfaithful Montand, Bergman enters into an affair with the much-younger Philip Van Der Besh (Anthony Perkins). Once he realizes that he's lost Paula to Philip, Roger offers to mend his rakish ways. She takes him back, and they are married; soon afterward, however, Roger goes back to his old skirt-chasing habits. Variety noted that Goodbye Again has "strong appeal for a middle-aged distaff audience"; nowadays, they'd call it a chick flick.

Moonface – Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped (2011)

Nas najomiljeniji drugar iz Kanade, pravo iz zemlje snova, svojim glasom vilenjaka vodi i nas tamo, svakog u svoju zemlju snova...
Canadian musician Spencer Krug has been maintaining quite a prolific career, what with being the frontman of much loved bands Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown. He’s also co-founder of indie-alt rock groups Swan Lake and Frog Eyes, all of which except for the latter have released albums recently.
Apparently this dude doesn’t sleep. In addition to all of the above, he’s been recording for solo project Moonface and it has just been confirmed that he’ll soon be dropping a full length titled Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped. Below we have the first single to fall from it, providing only a tiny taste of what we can expect from the LP.

Bodies of Water

Bodies of Water
Twist Again (Thousand Tongues,2011)

ko voli The Walkabouts atmosferu...

Twist Again, is LA band Bodies of Water’s third full-length release, and it is an assuredly confident affair, spanning a variety of musical styles. David Metcalfe’s noir-baritone sounding at times strikingly similar to that of Nick Cave, in both tone and delivery, especially on ‘New Age Nightmare’. Wife Meredith’s own vocals provide a counterpoint of beautifully soulful mellifluousness that sound simultaneously sweet and worldly. The husband-wife relationship at the core of the band creates a wonderfully balanced male/female dynamic, and is no doubt responsible for the amazing feeling of intimacy within their songs – it feels like the group are asking you to draw closer to the fire so they can sing you songs and tell you stories.

Pure Ecstasy – Pleasure (2011)

Moja Nova Galaxie Na Nekom Tamo 500 Nebu...
Mozda Nije Album Godine, Ali Top 5 For Sure...

Led by singer-songwriter Nate Grace, Austin’s Pure Ecstasy make lo-fi tunes insulated by plenty of reverb. Their music is simple, warm, direct. In a track review of their best song to date, the woozy “Easy”, Pitchfork’s Joe Colly said it sounds like “the long comedown after an all-night beach party.”

Crime d'amour , Alain Corneau (2010)

Ambitious young executive Isabelle (Ludivine Sagnier) and her scheming boss Christine (Kristin Scott-Thomas) enter into a vicious battle of wills after Christine begins stealing Isabelle's ideas and claiming them as her own. In time, the two women become embroiled in a power struggle that's rife with perverse sexual tension. ~

The Killer Inside Me (Burt Kennedy, 1976)

Everyone figures Lou Ford, a small-town, Montana, deputy sheriff, to be a normal, good-old-boy kind of regular Joe. But no one knows about "the sickness" that drives him to kill.

The Night of the Generals (Anatole Litvak, 1967)

The murder of a prostitute in Nazi occupied Warsaw draws Wehrmacht Major Grau into an investigation where the evidence points to one of three high ranking Generals. The trail leads Grau from Warsaw to Paris and straight into the 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, of which two of the Generals are deeply involved. Grau's case goes unfinished and it is not until 1965 when the true killer is brought to justice.

Sons And Daughters

Sons And Daughters
Mirror Mirror (Domino,2011)

If Mirror Mirror sounds like it would work as a horror soundtrack, that's no coincidence. The main inspirations for Sons & Daughters' third album were Dario Argento movies, sinister fairy tales and real-world bloodshed: more than one song is about a murder case. The Glaswegian band's chosen style this time around, namely dark vintage synth pop (early Human League) and scratchy, spindly post-punk (Wire, the Cure), matches the mood and subject matter perfectly.

Sparrow and The Workshop – Spitting Daggers (2011)

The second full length offering from the multi-national band sees them picking up where the first release left off. Spitting Daggers showcases a perfect mix of styles within one record, tied together by the signature ethereal vocal of Jill O’Sullivan. It takes all the previously loved elements of the band and adds a degree of muscle, where intense lyrics mimic the persistent beats with obsession and passion. ‘Our Lady of Potatoes’, the libidinous true story of Louis XV and his mistress, is concentrated fascination which sweeps across the record, of deep interest within an obscure topic and of, simply, love, which is further reinforced elsewhere on the record, such as ‘Soft Sound of Your Voice’. It takes the album to another level, creating an image of mysterious creativity and giving an edge to those oh-so-perfect harmonies and vocals.

Pink Mountaintops are METAL PROBLEM Watch “Through All the Worry”

Pink Mountaintops - "Through All The Worry" from stereogum on Vimeo.

Steve McBean and his band, Pink Mountaintops, were cast and appear as the band Metal Problem in the new film by Vancouver director Rob Leickner, Everything Louder Than Everything Else. The movie follows a woman who owns a recording studio, and Metal Theory records the song “Through All The Worry,” a new song by Pink Mountaintops. Steve McBean also performs in the movie (with lines and everything!). I totally buy that he’s in a rock band.

David J. Roch – Skin & Bones (2011)

Produced by Jim Sclavunos (of Grinderman and Nick Cave + The Bad Seeds), David J Roch’s debut album offers a collection of darkly romantic compositions of epic sweep. Whether set against a backdrop of lush orchestration, stark electronic ambience or thrumming crescendos, Roch’s voice compels and mesmerizes as it leaps from sonorous baritone to soaring falsetto.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich – Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm (2011)

One of the UK’s most exciting new prospects – Benjamin Francis Leftwich
is set to release his stunning debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The
Snowstorm’ on July 4th.
At just 21 years of age, Ben’s songwriting has a complex quizzical
innocence while the songs themselves inspired by a childhood listening
to Rolling Stones, Nina Simone and Bob Dylan, echo the enchanting
wordplay of Feist and the delicate elegance of Elliott Smith.

Matt Bauer – The Jessamine County Book Of The Living (2011)

Kentucky born, recording artist and songwriter, Matt Bauer is awaiting the release of his second album, The Jessamine County Book of the Living, with Crossbill Records, on June 7, 2011. Bauer’s style could be described as neo-industrial-folk and his vocal delivery, on this new album, can best be articulated as a raspy whisper that makes Bill Anderson sound like a hardcore screamer.

Vincent Van Gogh is the archetypical tortured artistic genius. His obsession with painting, combined with mental illness, propels him through an unhappy life full of failures and unrewarding relationships.

Brak - ispovest ludaka, August Strindberg,LOM(2010)

Prevodilac: Flavio Rigonat
Naslov originala: Le plaidoyer d"un fou / August Strindberg
„Najviše me iznenadio devojački izgled te žene, njenodetinjasto lice, iako joj jo bilo oko dvadeset pet godina. Istovremeno majka i devica. Obožavao sam je... "

Various Artists – Rave On Buddy Holly (2011)

Rave On Buddy Holly is an upcoming compilation album by various artists scheduled for release on June 28, 2011 through Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group.
Rock’n'roll pioneer Buddy Holly was no stodgy purist, an idea the best of this all-star tribute adopts gracefully. Florence and the Machine’s slinky, horn-spiced “Not Fade Away” seduces, Kid Rock’s retro-soul “Well All Right” grooves brawnily, Justin Townes Earle’s blue-collar “Maybe Baby” rollicks, and Lou Reed’s psyched-out “Peggy Sue” floats downstream through orchestral fuzz. Modest Mouse’s “That’ll Be the Day” goes a twitch too far, but then there’s Cee Lo Green
ebulliently belting out “(You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care,” which is so good it’ll give you hiccups.

Widowspeak – Widowspeak (2011)

New music from Brooklyn-via-Tacoma band Widowspeak: the debut LP following the “Gun Shy” 7-inch, which includes a cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” which followed the “Harsh Realm” 7-inch, which follows the “Widowspeak” EP — which is sadly no longer available for free download.
I’ve been really feeling Widowspeak’s drifty/wasted take on Americana. There’s a lot of guitar-centric roots-ish music going around lately, and for whatever reason I prefer bands who are more ghostly and aloof with it, rather than wide-eyed and overtly sentimental. Widowspeak is the former, and to me right on time, what the game’s been missing.

It is one of Chabrol's first films to include social criticism on bourgeoisie lifestyles that would become one of his trademarks in later films. Peter Murphy – Ninth (2011)

(From Pop Matters)
Saying that Peter Murphy is a slightly ridiculous performer is probably not the most controversial opinion one could hold. This is, you’ll remember, a man who has willingly performed suspended upside-down like a bat. Yet, Murphy is hardly lacking for substance; he has an impressive enough back catalogue to prove this. Murphy’s vigor (and slight ridiculousness) is apparent as soon as “Velocity Bird” opens his latest solo release, Ninth. It sounds like the Stooges fronted by a yabbering and forgone for the very last time Iggy Pop. Somehow—like much of Ninth—it works.

Madeleine Peyroux – Standing On The Rooftop (2011)

When you hear Madeleine‘s music you get the feeling that this sound comes from a jazz vocalist back in the ’50s and not from a 36 year old jazz vocalist. Madeleine Peyroux comes from Georgia and due to her hippie parents that were “eccentric educators” she decided to follow a career in music.
Madeleine Peyroux has been compared with great jazz artists and this is not a surprise since she has started singing at the age of fifteen and has evolved to a wonderful jazz artist. She has already released 5 successful albums, among them the album ‘Careless Love’ (2004) which was a major breakthrough, reaching Gold status in the US, selling over two million copies worldwide and landing on numerous top-of-the-year lists.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (Stanley Kramer,1967)

Joey Drayton brings her fiancé, Dr. John Prentice, home to sunny San Francisco to meet her affluent parents. Their liberal persuasions are now put to the test, for although the young man is an ideal choice (he's highly and internationally respected in the medical field, and he's impeccably mannered, handsome, well dressed and of a respectable California family), he's black.

Tim Buckley – Tim Buckley (Deluxe Remastered and Bonus CD/2011)

(From Uncut)
As time has passed, Tim Buckley has come to resemble an emblem for the watershed 1960s: restless, exploratory, inspired, fearless. Ever mercurial, Buckley’s truly outré efforts would come later – this is a man who despised pop formula. But his stunning, oft-overlooked 1966 debut stands as a dreamy, precocious requiem for its times.

Phil Cook & His Feat – Hungry Mother Blues (2011)

Pitchfork review:
“Megafaun stand out from a crowded field of Americana-inspired indie rock bands because of their investment in musical heritage, from old-time string bands and traditional folk ballads to jazz to 20th century classical. Last September in Durham, the historically rich North Carolina city the band calls home, they collaborated with former bandmate Justin Vernon, Brooklyn singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten, and Virginia jazz combo Fight the Big Bull on an expansive reinterpretation of one of American folk’s sacred documents, Sounds of the South, the anthology recorded by Alan Lomax circa 1960. It’s no stretch to imagine that Megafaun multitasker Phil Cook’s immersion in this venerable material shaped the deep-rooted simplicity of his solo debut.

XXY, Lucía Puenzo (2008)

Lucia Puenzo's drama XXY probes the psychological aftereffects that adolescent transsexuality can yield. With a name easily applicable to either gender, young teenager Alex's (Ines Efron) hermaphroditic physiology causes a massive identity crisis and severe emotional withdrawal. The problems create social problems in the family's home of Argentina and virtually force Alex and his/her sympathetic parents, Kraken (Ricardo Darín) and Suli (Valeria Bertuchelli) to move to nearby Uruguay, at a point when Alex wrestles with the throes of puberty. The situation grows increasingly complex when several friends of the family arrive: marrieds Erika (Carolina Pelereti) and Ramiro (German Palacios), a plastic surgeon, and their adolescent son, Alvaro (Martin Piroyanski), whom Alex instantly propositions for sex. As Alex battles some local punks who try unsuccessfully to rape him/her (saved at the last minute by Kraken), Alvaro finally accepts Alex's promptings for intercourse and comes to a gradual realization of his own gayness. Meanwhile, the rift between the adults and the youth widens with increasing rapidity.

The Walkmen, Primavera Sound, 2011

Adam's Apples, Anders Thomas Jensen (2007)

An overly-optimistic preacher with a penchant for taking in lost causes to help around his remote church finds his rose-tinted view of the world challenged by a psychotic neo-Nazi he is trying to reform in this jet black comedy from Green Butchers screenwriter/director Anders Thomas Jensen. Vicar Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen) prides himself on his efforts to help those in need by offering them a variety of odd jobs around the church and spreading the good word. After "adopting" a violent Saudi immigrant and a drunken tennis pro with a history of sexual assault, Ivan is approached by Adam (Ulrich Thomsen) -- a decidedly non-reformed neo-Nazi planning to lie low in the countryside for a spell before returning to the city to once again wreak havoc. When Ivan inquires as to what his new charge's goal will be during his stay in the countryside, the snide hooligan sarcastically states that he would like to bake a cake -- a response which prompts the gullible Ivan to place him in charge of the church's cherished apple tree. As ravens immediately descend upon the tree, Ivan concludes that Satan is attempting to prevent Adam from realizing his true potential. Meanwhile, Adam takes it upon himself to give the cheery clergyman a crash course in the harsh realities of life.

Alina Simone – Make Your Own Danger (2011)

Alina Simone is as talented as she is down to earth. The Ukrainian-born indie rocker has a storied journey that is reflected in her music. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Alina is prepared for her fourth trip to SXSW and will ironically be returning to the first place she ever sang in public, 6th street.
Make Your Own Danger was produced by Steve Revitte (Yeasayer, Liars, Black Dice) and features a larger cast of musicians and exotic touches including flute, autoharp, horns, Brazilian drumming and vocal loops.

City and Colour – Little Hell (2011)

City and Colour is the side project of Alexisonfire guitarist and vocalist Dallas Green, started in 2004. The project title derives its name from Dallas’ own: Dallas, a city, and Green, a colour. Dallas is praised by critics and fans alike for his strong, clear vocals and his guitar playing skills. To date, Dallas has released two EPs, “The Death of Me” (2004) and “Missing” (2005), as well as two full length albums, “Sometimes” (2005) and “Bring Me Your Love” (2008).

David Sylvian – Died in the Wool (2011)

Died in the Wool — variations on David Sylvian’s 2009 release Manafon with the addition of 6 new pieces, including collaborations with acclaimed composer Dai Fujikura, producers Jan Bang and Erik Honoré and a stellar roster of contemporary musicians and improvisers.

David Thomas Broughton – Outbreeding (2011)

David Thomas Broughton is nothing if not underrated. That is not to say he isn’t rated at all, but in some ways the level of acclaim seems disproportionate to what he has managed to produce so far. No surprise that this level continues and even increases with Outbreeding, a record which captures the man and the musician perfectly in its ten tracks of fluctuating emotional peaks and troughs and fits and starts.
An overload of variety can be perplexing, whether it’s to the mouth, eyes or the ears. The eye wanders, but so does the ear and it’s difficult, nay impossible, to not be distracted by the myriad streams entering the auditory canals during the course of Outbreeding. There is an awful lot happening left, right and centre with simple beginnings becoming greater and greater. The one component which holds it together and keeps your attention the most is Broughton’s voice – his literary voice as much as his musical one. It was often said that beige-suited and beige-skinned cricket commentator Richie Benaud was (and still is) a great because he only told the listener what they needed to know, with the pictures filling the thoughts when he wasn’t orating. That philosophy applies to DTB, too, who knows when to sing, unrushed, and when to let everything else play out, unaccompanied vocally.

The Black Angels - Primavera Sound 2011, Barcelona

Les valseuses(Going Places), Bertrand Blier, 1974

Two whimsical, aimless thugs harass and assault women, steal, murder, and alternately charm, fight, or sprint their way out of trouble. They take whatever the bourgeois characters value: whether it's cars, peace of mind, or daughters. Marie-Ange, a jaded, passive hairdresser, joins them as lover, cook, and mother confessor. She's on her own search for seemingly unattainable sexual pleasure.
