Deerhunter

Deerhunter
Halcyon Digest
[4AD,2010]

Halcyon Digest is a record about the joy of music discovery, the thrill of listening for the first time to a potential future favorite, and that sense of boundless possibility when you're still innocent of indie-mainstream politics and your personal canon is far from set. In revisiting that youthful enthusiasm, Deerhunter brilliantly rekindle it, and the result meets Microcastle/Weird Era (Cont.) as the band's most exhilarating work to date. Whether those halcyon days were real or just idealized doesn't matter. With producer Ben Allen, who lent a bass-heavy sheen to Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion, these four guys-- lead singer Bradford Cox, singer/guitarist Lockett Pundt, bass player Josh Fauver, and drummer Moses Archuleta-- have created a seamless album of startling emotional clarity.

Our Broken Garden

Our Broken Garden
Golden Sea
[Bella Union,2010]

Hailing from Denmark, Our Broken Garden is the sound of sometime Efterklang keyboardist Anna Bronsted’s bewitching voice. Following the Lost Sailor debut EP, their debut album “When The Blackening Shows” arrived in 2008. Anna’s connection to water began here, with various nautical references in her lyrics, and a deeply atmospheric, drifting ebb and flow to the sound, with a serene, torchy Anna resembling a modern day siren at its heart.

Twin Shadow

Twin Shadow
Forget
Terrible Records/4AD [2010]

George Lewis Jr., the man behind the moody synth-pop of Twin Shadow, has wild hair and a debut full-length album, Forget. Lewis describes the album as “bedroom-recorded music, but it’s been done with the same attention as many classic B-movies.” With production courtesy of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, expect an intimate pop record with fuzzy synths. Forget also marks the first album release for Taylor’s label Terrible Records.

Suede Announce Best Of

Suede have announced that their beltingly well-received reunion gigs will be celebrated by a new "best of" album. The Best Of Suede will be released on November 1st. Spreading across two discs, it mixes singles, album tracks and b-sides, and was curated by singer Brett Anderson. We especially like the way they've bunged the magisterial closing tracks to Dog Man Star at the end of disc two. The album will be accompanied by exclusive iTunes interview material.

Toshimaru Nakamura - Egrets

“Toshimaru Nakamura came to his current instrument, the no-input mixing board, after a long and increasingly unharmonious relationship with the guitar. Although he bore (and bears — I had a conversation with him a few years ago in which he shared his love for the look of the instruments he had just seen in a Chicago guitar shop) the instrument affection, he was frustrated by continually trying to get it to do something. By cutting the guitar out of his set-up and concentrating on the feedback generated by plugging his mixing board’s output into its input jacks, he found his way into a less domineering, more collaborative, and most importantly egosyntonic relationship with his sound source. So while it’s tempting to celebrate the increased control he’s established over his instrument over time — certainly his work on Egrets or ErstLive 8, his recent duet with Keith Rowe, sounds more intentional and guided — I’m not sure if it’s true. Maybe it’s more accurate to say that he’s gotten better at helping the instrument to have its say...

Islaja - Keraaminen Pää (Fonal, 2010)

“Islaja (aka Merja Kokkonen) returns for a long-overdue new studio album for Fonal, following up on the groundwork laid down by Ulual Yyy and her Ecstatic Peace release, Blaze Mountain Recordings. Gone are the old lo-fi aesthetics and all those sounds that conjured up images of woodland frolicking and Moomins, and in their place are newfound electronic production/writing techniques and a far higher fidelity sheen. Among the highlights, expect dark, organic synth grooves, horn blasts and lurching beats on opener ‘Joku Toi Radion’, almost Bat For Lashes-like piano-led introspection during ‘Pimeytta Kohti’ and the rhythmically uptempo, unusually poppy lament of ‘Rakkauden Palvelija / 14. Käsky’. We recently had Islaja’s split release with Christina Carter on Root Strata to remind us of just how great her music can be, but Keraaminen Paa seems to inject new energy into her sound, taking a direction that puts more distance than ever between the artist and her esoteric, avant-folk origins…

WILDBIRDS & PEACEDRUMS
Rivers [2010]
The Leaf Label

Earlier this year, Swedish duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums released two somewhat different EPs which have now been collected into one full length album. If the drummer/vocalist format has been a tad overdone in recent years, husband and wife Andreas Werliin (drums and percussions) and Mariam Wallentin (vocals and percussions) have developed quite a unique take on experimental pop music in the two years since their debut, Heartcore, was released. At once tribal and visceral on one side, and deeply emotional and oddly cinematic on the other, the duo’s songs have widened in scope ever since. Recorded in Reykjavik in just a few days last January, Retina and Iris, the two EPs making this album, gather some of the band’s most ambitious and impressive songs to date.

Eskmo

First single on Ninja Tune from new label signee Eskmo (aka Brendan Angelides).
Eskmo is a young artist deeply rooted in the resurgence of electronic music, with the vision and talent to write songs that defy genre and could only be his own. With prior recordings being released on esteemed labels Warp and Planet Mu, San Francisco based Eskmo is already being touted as one of the key artists in a new wave of creativity in electronica. escribed by Bleep.com as “Masterfully produced… sophisticated, post-Dilla hip-hop funk,” Eskmo‘s music has caught the attention of Amon Tobin, who he collaborated with on a recent project entitled Eskamon. He has also toured as a live act throughout North America and Europe, and opened for both Amon and Flying Lotus. Eskmo’s brand new album will be out 4th October 2010 on Ninja Tune

The world of French cinema is in mourning for one of its greatest and most prolific directors, Claude Chabrol, who died today aged 80.

Las Robertas

Costa Rican all-girl teen garage rippers Las Robertas are set to release a newly mixed and mastered version of their fuzzed-out debut LP Cry Out Loud on the highly esteemed Art Fag Recordings on October 12. Here’s a buzzing, simple-but-effective jam from the new record, which has a casual-cool air that’s influenced in equal measure by the girls’ love for early-’90s noise-pop (Black Tambourine, Sonic Youth) and the current crew of hazy lo-fi girl-groups (Vivian/Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast).

The Dears - Omega Dog

The Dears have released a live version of “Omega Dog”, the first track off of their forthcoming new album, due out in February on Dangerbird Records. The live footage of this explosive new song comes from the band’s string of shows in Mexico City this past May.

Moriarty
Gee Whiz, But This Is A Lonesome Town

Moriarty is made up of five artists of French, American, Swiss and Vietnamese origin. The group was named Moriarty in reference to Dean Moriarty, the hero of On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Moriarty’s music is a sweet musical anachronism. It could have been inspired by American and Irish folk, but also blues from the south of United States and even by country music. But it's difficult to describe Moriarty only with these few words, each songs tells a story, occasionally true, often false, but always intense. The band members all live in their own creative universe they called Moriartyland.

Cocoon
All My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash

Two sublime voices that seem made to blend together, an acoustic guitar bursting forth with powerful arpeggios, poignant keyboards and even a catchy ukulele from time to time... Almost nothing and yet it goes straight to the heart, everywhere that they play... Introducing Cocoon.
Unstoppable melodies, melancholic or airy texts and moving pieces that almost immediately enter the personal pantheon of all pop-folk fans... And Cocoon has only just begun its musical adventures!

Cocoon is a two-piece French band formed in 2006 by Mark Daumail ( composition, lead vocals, acoustic guitar, ukelele, banjo, beatbox, etc.) and Morgane Imbeaud (vocal harmonies, keyboards, arrangements).“Basically, Cocoon’s musical inspiration goes all the way from groups like The Pentangle and Fairport Convention right through to the ‘new folk’ movement that surfaced around the beginning of 2000 with artists like CocoRosie, Devendra Banhart and Sufjan Stevens.”

Septembarski shoegazing

Low Sea - The Light EP

Low Sea, the enchanting duo (Billie and Bobby D) from Galway, County Galway, Ireland. Their sound is grand psychedelic mixture of shoegaze and noisepop - with influences like Suicide, A R Kane, Mazzy Star and Spacemen 3 springing instantly to my mind. This is textured and layered fuzz with a heavy leaning towards atmospheric songs and a drifting ethereal guitar sound.

For Low Sea, ‘The Light’ is a continuation of their dreamy, hypnotic, time warp woven tapestries of music. This is music for thinkers and dreamers. Lead singer Billie takes you through her strange and twisted world of psychedelic laden musical wonder. Her voice is so ereerily similar to that of Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star that you’d almost think Billie is channeling from her. This wonderful Irish shoegazey dreamy creamyspacedrock, overlaiden with synthed out blissfulness is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stuffed up genre with bands that all sound the same. Reverb soaked, ethereal vocals chased by an electronic back beat not heard in this genre before.

Crocodiles - Hearts of love
[Fat Possum,2010]

San Diego's Crocodiles psychedelic, hypnotic melodies, trademark jerk and noise punk. Straddling vast sonic terrains from the jagged guitar stabs, throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable punk jams, drew comparisons with The Velvets, Jesus & Mary Chain,Primal Scream.

How To Dress Well

How To Dress Well
Love Remains [Lefse,2010]

Love Remains is the debut full-length from How To Dress Well. These 14 songs are the stories told by the walls of abandoned buildings and the voices that lay lifeless beneath the floorboards. But, these stories are merely fragments of dying memories that haunt the rooms they once inhabited. Through gorgeously haunting voices, we may hear words such as “love” or “girl,” but these are just the ghosts of stories we have to write ourselves. And, as we piece it all together, we discover deteriorating images of love...

Frank (just Frank)

Frank (just Frank)
The Brutal Wave [Wierd Records,2010]

Wierd Records presents the debut album from Frank(just Frank) from Paris, France entitled The Brutal Wave. The Brutal Wave draws from many rich traditions of US and UK guitar driven wave, minimal synth, early black metal and new indie rock from Brooklyn respectively - layering lush washes of atmospheric anglophilic guitars above a warmly orchestral analogue synth and drum machine fueled minimal electronic backdrop. Equally of disparate origins are the band members themselves, despite such varied influences and backgrounds, Frank(just Frank) indeed proudly embrace the French pop musical tradition and present a freshly recontextualized version of the french cold wave sound, which might well be most appropriately called ‘La Vague Froide Moderne’ in 2010.

Cloundland Canyon - Fin Eaves

Kip and Kelly Ulhorn’s mystic, kosmische-inspired Cloudland Canyon project returns for a third long-player, this time taking emphasis away from the krautrock-isms explored on prior works and creating a kind of psych-drone friendly strain of dream-pop. This new approach takes Cloudland Canyon to a whole other level. Fin Eaves is nine tracks of extensively dense, thoroughly weird, psychedelic noise.

Laetitia Sadier
The Trip [Drag City,2010]

The first solo album by Laetitia Sadier, former vocalist for the underground pop group Stereolab. A simple, repeated four-note motif provides the rhythmic backbone for much of the song as Laetitia’s familiarly husky tones glide smoothly atop. A woozy veil of keyboards and flourishes of electronic effects provide a contrastingly dreamy feel that culminates in a stripped and slowed down finale. The Trip  features ten new tracks by Sadier, plus two covers: "Un Soir, Un Chien" by French pop group Les Rita Mitsouko and "By the Sea" by '70s American vocal duo Wendy and Bonnie.

Fabienne Delsol
On My Mind [Damaged Goods,2010]

Originally from Limoges in France, Fabienne was formerly the lead singer of legendary London garage band The Bristols and has been living and working in London. “On My Mind” features Fabienne’s customary mixture of both English and French lyrics sung with plenty of coquettish charm. With songs and production so authentically 60′s they could have been taken from tapes gathering dust in Serge Gainsbourg’s garage for the last 40 years.
The album marks something of a departure from the jaunty beat-pop and ye-ye of her previous albums however, there’s a definite autumnal feel to several of the tracks, putting you in mind of what the much mooted Francoise Hardy/Nick Drake collaboration might have yielded. Lyrically the bulk of the album deals with the melancholic side of love and has a slightly trippy and introspective edge. Most notably on “Strange Shadows” and the title track “On my Mind” with its phased drums and “Strawberry Fields” style moog motifs. You’re unlikely to hear a better record this autumn!

Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead
Penny Sparkle [4AD,2010]

Penny Sparkle - the band's third album for 4ad - marks another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon. the band recorded 'penny sparkle' in new york and stockholm, working with fever ray producers van rivers and the subliminal kid, whose synth-heavy background has had a stunning effect on blonde redhead's luxuriant guitar clangor. shoegaze legend alan moulder mixed.

In a press release, frontwoman Kazu Makino, in typically impenetrable form, had this to say about the album: "I fell in love with the music like falling for someone you've known for a long time. It was dreamy and sometimes was very stormy. At times I felt like a shepherd who was trying to herd five stallions into a yard (unsuccessfully). I felt like I was a link to everyone. I remained still and the others were constantly moving around it. I am not sure what Penny Sparkle is but I hope I offered to them as much as they offered me. I know that we have never made a record this way and if I could go back in time, I would do it exactly the same way again."

Salem

Salem
King Night [IAMSOUND,2010]

King Night is the debut album from Michigan/Chicago-based trio Salem, who's been pegged as the creators of their own genre of music, drag (aka witch house). Releasing a series of vinyl EPs over the past two years, Salem have built a fanatical cult following as they evoke certain elements of ethereal shoegaze. Featuring bass-dominated beats, and deep and distorted vocals, this synth duo create a closed and claustrophobic sound.

Nostalgican video i audio melanholija...

Grasslung

Artist - Grasslung
Album - Sincere Void
Label - Root Strata
Genre - Electronic
Style -  Ambient, Drone, Experimental

Continuing on in a string of excellent releases, with recent LPs from Common Eider, King Eider and Duane Pitre, Root Strata presents us with a wonderful new album from Grasslung, whose “Sincere Void” combines beguiling drone excursions that segue nicely into abrasive feedback and thought-provoking dissections of space and time…

Operating within a territory shrouded in mystery, Jonas Asher, otherwise known as Grasslung, lives and works, as his myspace page points out, in the confines of “No Where, New York” (a place all too-familiar to this devoted listener). The music contained in this release couldn’t have come from any other place. While Grasslung has released a number of cassettes, cdrs, and a lathe cut(!), “Sincere Void” marks his first “official” release.

Tamaryn

Tamaryn
The Waves [Mexican Summer,2010]

New York-to-San Francisco Siouxsie Sioux-on-My Bloody Valentine duo Tamaryn take their name from their vocalist, but it’s the combination of her atmospheric vocals, a thick bed of warping, smeary instrumentation (via ex-Vue member Rex John Shelverton), and icy hooks that makes their debut The Waves so stunning. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven ethereal atmospheres, against which Tamaryn’s voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surface.
The Waves is a masterful collision of hypnotic psychedelia and bittersweet dream pop - My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Mazzy Star.
