Dark Passage, Delmer Daves (1947)

Robert Montgomery's 1946 film Lady in the Lake attempted to tell the entire story with a "subjective camera": shooting the film from the point of view of the main character, with the camera acting as his "eyes". The first hour or so of Dark Passage does the same thing--and the results are far more successful than anything seen in Montgomery's film. Humphrey Bogart heads the cast as an escaped convict, wrongly accused of his wife's murder. After being forced to beat up a man (Clifton Young) from whom he's hitched a ride, Bogart hides out in the apartment of Lauren Bacall, while recovering from plastic surgery, and tries to set about locating the actual murderer.

The Barefoot Contessa,Joseph L. Mankiewicz(1954)

The Barefoot Contessa begins at the funeral of Ava Gardner, a former Spanish peasant, cabaret dancer and movie star, who at the time of her death was a full-fledged contessa. Her life story unfolds in flashback recollections from her mourners. Film director Humphrey Bogart recalls how his career was saved when he discovered Gardner on behalf of Howard R. Hughes-like mogul Warren Stevens. Press agent Edmond O'Brien remembers how Ava was wooed and then abandoned by mercurial millionaire Marius Goring, and Italian count Rosanno Brazzi reflects on how he was able to wed the tempestuous Gardner, only to watch his world crumble after revealing on their wedding night that he was "only half a man." O'Brien received Best Supporting Actor awards at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes in 1954.

Grouper

Grouper
A I A : Dream Loss/Alien Observer [Yellowelectric,2011]

At this point you shouldn’t need any introduction to Liz Harris, better known to most as Grouper. She’s got a few albums and splits under her belt now, but chances are the first time you came across her music was the stunningy beautiful modern classic ‘Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill’, released back in 2008. It was the distinct and singular blend of shimmering dream-pop and tape-mangled noise that had just about anyone worth their salt in awe of her music, so you can imagine the hype surrounding this brand new record. Ah, but then it’s not only one record is it? A I A is two full forty minute full-lengths, and rather than a traditional double, these are two very distinct albums, each one with its own focus and style. ‘Alien Observer’ might be the more outwardly song-based of the two records, and while the songs aren’t necessarily as clearly defined as those on ‘Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill’, they slowly and pointedly push up through Liz’s familiar gaseous layers of drone. Her distinct, breathy tones are initially barely audible over the mudded harmonies, starting life as ghostly echoes, but the further you get into each track the more clearly defined shapes start to emerge.

But Bibiane has not been especially happy in her work lately, owing in part to an unexpected pregnancy that led her to have an abortion. Bibiane tries drowning her sorrows in alcohol and drugs, and late one night, after several drinks too many, she hits a jaywalker while driving home.

Peaking Lights
936 (Not Not Fun,2011)

Properly immersive album of lambent kraut-dub groovers and fuggy psyche from the Madison, WI duo of Peaking Lights - sounding something like the bastard child of Forest Swords, Zola Jesus and Nite Jewel. Their hauntingly melodic '936' is made of the stuff we could happily hear on loop all day. Like Pocahaunted or Sun Araw minus the noisiest elements, their trance mantras lasso the flightiest psyche essence and lets it guide them through ethereal other-zones, Indra Dunis' vox streaming echoic comtrails across dusted desert dub landscapes..

Southeast Egine – Canary (2011)

(Review from Tiny Mixed Tapes)
To my mind, it seems like Southeast Engine have always striven for timeliness rather than timelessness. “Ain’t that the way things go/ Down to an all-time low/ We lost all our discoveries/ Now we’re waiting on recoveries,” goes “Cold Front Blues,” the second track off Canary, invoking hopelessness with a certain hardscrabble moral authority, a voice that resonates in America’s current post-bailout, high-unemployment miasma.

Maria Minerva

Maria Minerva
Tallinn At Dawn (Not Not Fun, 2011)

moj apsolutni favorit..
+prava devojka za Connan Mockasina

Maria Minerva looks set to become one of the year's most noted female producers/singers on the scene. She won our hearts with that subtly demented 'Noble Savage' 12" for 100% Silk and now has us totally enraptured with her debut full length 'Tallinn At Dawn'. Considering her origins in Estonia, it's possible to say her perceptions of Western pop music have been filtered through a Soviet muslin, narcotically numbed pop peek behind the iron curtain and become assimilated into her naive daydream simulacra. She's now based in London which has obviously turned all that on its head, and shaken it about some. The result is indescribably engrossing and simply too mixed up to pick apart, those influences now part of something insoluble, mutant and fascinating.

Chelsea Wolfe

Chelsea Wolfe
The Grime and the Glow
(Pendu Sound,2011)

absolutely perfect gothicly corrupted pop music from darkly inclined chelsea wolfe. wolfe's sound can begin sweetly in the pop realm and then veer wildly into industrial clatter or zola jesus-style crooning. like mushy or even esben and the witch, the music here seems to emit from a darkly glowing netherworld between sleep and nightmare, where bedroom musicians either cloak their tunes in festering noise washes or whittle down the harshness to reveal a shimmering pop nugget. there's a lot of space between the clatterings and whisperings: 'the grime and the glow' is one of the creepiest lps we've heard in a while.

Exit Through the Gift Shop, Banksy (2010)

Exit Through the Gift Shop marks the feature-film debut of notorious street artist Banksy. The documentary's focus is French-born L.A. thrift-shop owner Thierry Guetta, whose apparent compulsion to videotape every moment of his life led him to document the phenomenon of contemporary street art. Guetta's cousin, a street artist known as Space Invader, allowed the avid cameraman to tape him as he illegally spread his artwork, and Space Invader also introduced him to other street artists, whose work Guetta captured on tape. Eventually, Guetta hooked up with Shepard Fairey, who was best known (before he created an iconic Barack Obama campaign poster) for his widespread stickers featuring an image of the late wrestler Andre the Giant over the word "OBEY."

J'ai tué ma mère, Xavier Dolan (2009)

A 16-year-old boy becomes obsessed with the tempestuous relationship he shares with his mother while drifting through early life and exploring the mysteries of adolescence. Hubert Minel doesn't love his mother, but instead regards her with open contempt; her sweaters are tacky, her decorations around the house are terminally kitsch, and food is always getting stuck around the corners of her mouth when she eats. But it's not just the surface details that drive Hubert insane; his parents wield manipulation and guilt like sharpened instruments of punishment, and the psychological torment is becoming too much to bear. As Hubert's fixation on the volatile love/hate relationship threatens to consume his entire family, artistic discovery, early sexual experimentation, and illicit experiences hint at an undiscovered world of opportunity.

Hazmat Modine – Cicada (2011)

New York-based folk group/ethnomusicology experiment Hazmat Modine draw from a wide array of influences and time periods. Performing music from the ’20s through the early ’60s, including genres such as swing, klezmer, hokum jug band, blues, rocksteady, and more, the dual harmonica-fronted band has earned a reputation as fearless world music alchemists. Debut Bahamut came out in 2006, landing a spot in Billboard’s Top Blues Albums category and numerous international charts.
In 2011, the band will release its sophomore CD Cicada. Like that mysterious insect, who as a nymph lives in the earth surrounded by roots and then comes forth to sing, the music created by these eight accomplished and inventive musicians is earthy and at one with its origins, but suggestive of mysterious worlds beyond.

Guillemots – Walk The River (2011)

Guillemots’ slow-burning debut, Through the Windowpane, embraced so many influences from rock, folk, pop and jazz that it was hard to properly position the band. Despite this magpie approach they were nominated for 2006’s Mercury Prize, and 2008’s Red reached the UK top 10. The band paused while singer Fyfe Dangerfield released a solo album, Fly Yellow Moon, in 2010. For a man pursuing the quirky, its acoustic love songs were surprisingly conventional, though no weaker for it. And now, with recent discs from contemporaries Mystery Jets and Noah and the Whale aiming at the big time, a slick overhaul can be expected on Guillemots’ third set.

The brutal regime made no attempt to reform or improve the inmates and actively encouraged a power struggle between the 'tough' new inmate and the 'old hands'.

Robyn Hitchcock – TROMSØ, KAPTEIN (2011)

Robyn Hitchcock is one of England's most enduring contemporary singer/songwriters and live performers. Despite having been persistently branded as eccentric or quirky for much of his career, Hitchcock has continued to develop his whimsical repertoire, deepen his surreal catalog, and expand his devoted audience beyond the boundaries of cult stature. He is among alternative rock's father figures and is the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest inspiration).

Noviembre, Achero Manas (2003)

Impelled by a spirit which still preserves a patina of idealism, Alfredo arrives in Madrid intent on creating "a performance which is freer, straight from the heart, capable of making people feel alive". His concept of what theater should be begins beyond the stage, out in the streets face to face with the public. Outdoors, in any town square, in a park or in the city's most commercial street, Alfredo and his troupe NOVEMBER start the show: demons to provoke passers-by, displays of social conscience, actions taken to the extreme to put the forces of law and order on full alert. There are no limits, no censorship; only ideas which are always valid so long as the public ceases to be the public and becomes part of the show swept by surprise, fear, tears or laughter.

The Feelies – Here Before (2011)

The new album touches on different styles from the Feelies’ long history while adding new grooves and musical ideas to the mix. Electric and acoustic guitars melt together in archetypal Feelies fashion on songs like “Nobody Knows” and “Should be Gone. ” Elsewhere there are slabs of driving garage rock like “When You Know” and “Time Is Right” and the down-tempo “Bluer Skies,” and harmonically rich “Later On.”
Here Before was recorded at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ (home to indie kindred spirits Yo La Tengo) and was produced by Glenn and Bill.

Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs – No Help Coming (2011)

Our affection for Holly Golightly is no secret. There are few things more reliable than the arrival of a new album from the garage-rock veteran, both in terms of quality and frequency. Rarely does a year go by when Holly doesn’t churn out a great new record, and so it is that No Help Coming arrives bang on schedule after last year’s entertaining Dirt Don’t Hurt. Golightly’s impressive longevity spits in the faces of those who claim that reinvention is the key to surviving in the music business; “I still only know the same chords I did when I was fourteen, and I still write songs about the same things,” she says proudly.

Birds Of Passage

Birds Of Passage
Without The World [Denovali,2011]

The influences of Alicia Merz ' the girl behind BIRDS OF PASSAGE ' are her memories, breathless-inspiring cold winds, the smell and atmosphere of a spring day, smoking cigarettes, sunshine and shadows. As a mixture of all these elements and a minimalistic experimental instrumentation you could describe her music as follows: sometimes shy, sometimes more energetic ('Fantastic Frown') but always intensely and extremly private. Listening to her debut record WITHOUT THE WORLD is like sharing one long day with Alicia and her thoughts in the diverse landscapes of her home country New Zealand.
