Chelsea Wolfe – Apokalypsis (2010)

"Chelsea Wolfe is a (California) native who prefers to bask in unforgiving darkness instead of her hometown’s dominantly sunny rays. The Grime And The Glow saw light in late December on Pendu Sound Recordings. The album pairs Wolfe’s unwavering, young Stevie Nicks-esque vocals alongside bone-chilling distortion and splintered instrumentation. “Moses”, a great introduction to Chelsea’s sound, maintains a heavy burdensome drum beat and Wolfe’s trademark parking garage croon that cuts deep. “Cousins of the Antichrist” is a swaying goth-folk number perfect for your next visit to a decaying cathedral.

This fourteen track disc maintains a lot of diversity which is always impressive when considering the bulk of grim noise rock. “Deep Talk” is three minutes of thick guitar sludge fueled only by Wolfe’s pained moans. “Fang” follows with an otherworldly jagged beat and Wolfe lamenting over the line “I was not lying when I said I would try.” The operatic and opulent instrumental “Benjamin” features an endlessly trailing piano that is slowly encroached upon by budding dark undertones and Chelsea’s soft whispers. Chelsea’s music runs on a welcome dose of despair that allows her to glide from hot to cold with ease. She channels the heartbroken stories of many different women; everyone from the hopeless veiled widow to the spider woman on a path of destruction.
