Gainsbourg (Vie Heroique)

Adored and despised in fairly equal measure, Serge Gainsbourg is the subject of an appropriately spiky biopic. A glimpse at the life of French singer, from growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris through his successful song-writing years in the 1960s to his death in 1991.

LE REFUGE
Prolific French director Francois Ozon returns to the big screen with an elegant drama about a pregnant woman recovering from drug addiction and the death of her lover.

The Illusionist

This new animated feature from Chomet (Belleville Rendezvous) centres around a down-on-his-luck illusionist. Now that the theatres and large performance venues have been taken over by rock bands and pop singers, he has been forced to ply his trade in bars, cafés, and basements. One day, whilst performing in a small Scottish pub on a remote island, the illusionist encounters a pretty young girl who is captivated by hisotherworldly abilities and joins him on his travels. Eventually he must decide whether to continue trying to impress, or to reveal that he lacks supernatural powers – and thus crush his young charge’s dreams. Beautifully illustrated, The Illusionist will break your heart.
