Fleet Foxes are one of those bands that arrived so fully formed that it was hard to imagine where they'd take their sound next, and judging by the long gap between their debut LP and the upcoming Helplessness Blues, it seems the group may have struggled with that notion some as well. The eponymous lead single from the record finds them honing their intricate baroque folk while at the same time trying out a more straightforward, lyrical approach. The most notable difference between "Helplessness Blues" and the Sun Giant/Fleet Foxes material is that frontman Robin Pecknold's words and vocals are front and center, high in the mix. Over a surging acoustic instrumental, he sings about existential fear ("What's my name? What's my station? Oh, just tell me what I should do") in a hopeful and earnest way. Some will probably call these lyrics hokey, but they're delivered with such sincerity (and vocal warmth) that I can't help but go along for the ride. The song is essentially two halves, and around the three-minute mark, the whole band appears, and it bursts into a more reverberant, orchestral section that just shimmers. It's here where you remember how great these guys sound when they're firing on all cylinders, and it's easy to think there could be more of this kind of lovely sprawl on the record's other tracks.

As the Black Death sweeps through Medieval England, young monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) sends his girlfriend, Averill (Kimberly Nixon), to the safety of the remote forest while he remains at the monastery to serve God. Shortly thereafter, Ulric (Sean Bean) and his fierce band of Christian crusaders show up seeking a guide to help them locate an isolated village that is said to be untouched by the Black Plague. Convinced that this may be his one opportunity to reunite with Averill and serve a higher power at the same time, Osmund volunteers. Later, as the group departs, Osmund learns that their mission has much darker implications. Rumors persist that within the village dwells a necromancer with the power to bring the dead back to life; their true goal is to take the sorcerer back to the bishop for confession, trial, and execution.

Early one morning, Marcos observes Juan successfully pulling off a bill-changing scam on a cashier, and then getting caught as he attempts to pull the same trick on the next shift. Marcos steps in, claiming to be a policeman, and drags Juan out of the store. Once they are back on the street, Marcos reveals himself to be a fellow swindler with a game of much higher stakes in mind, and he invites Juan to be his partner in crime.
The alt-country super-group return with new album ‘Marble Son’ this spring, released through Fargo Records. The Seattle based singer and her band, featuring ex Whiskeytown and The Walkabouts personnel, have ventured into darker territory on this record, creating a bizarre and beautiful mix of 70’s country rock and heavy-doom; timeless and yet wonderfully avantgarde.
Nema iznenadjenja, jos jedan veoma dobar album za Ben Chasny-a, neprestana mantra...
Inspired by the tragic school shooting that took place at Montreal's Polytechnique school on December 6, 1989, director Denis Villeneuve's melancholy docudrama portrays the events as seen from the perspective of two students, Valérie (Karine Vanasse) and Jean-François (Sebastien Huberdeau). When an armed madman enters the school with the intention of killing as many females as possible, the lives of every student involved are forever changed.

‘Arghiledes’ is a brilliant homage to Greek Rebetiko music of the early 20th century by No Neck Blues Band’s David Shuford aka D. Charles Speer. It’s his 2nd solo LP under this moniker and a deeply researched, beautifully executed effort replete with in depth sleeve notes and paste-on cover. Coming from a Blues playing American of Greek descent, the project reflects the syncretic nature of Rebetiko music, itself made up of the many disparate elements which formed Greek urban folk music (European music, Greek Orthodox ecclestiastical chant, Byzantine music and the modal traditions of Ottoman art music and café music) of this era. It was seen as the music of hashish dens and criminals, speaking of the underworld and its associated vices, but most importantly with this music, even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the achingly melancholy melodies and lyrical style of playing conveys a far stronger, longer lasting emotion. The most affecting, and evincing of these tracks are those which add something extra to typical Rembetika array of bouzouki, baglamas, mandolins, gudulka etc, like the sliver of droning synth in his rendition of the classic ‘Márko’s Cave’, the bouncing delay trails of ‘Lost Dervish’ or the stoned ghosts in the whisky ether of ‘Harmánis’. Fans of everything from Jack Rose to Honest Jon’s Middle Eastern missive will really appreciate this album.
Considered by many to be one of America’s greatest living songwriters, Williams lives up to that and more by delivering 12 new songs that cover an even wider emotional spectrum than her previous work, without moving too far in any one direction. Blessed opens with the gritty kiss-off “Buttercup” then moves seamlessly into the sultry blues of “Born To Be Loved”. Williams delves into a heavier subject as she questions the motives for a suicide on the hard-driving “Seeing Black”, which features blistering guitar from Elvis Costello.
