Jesca Hoop is American singer-songwriter, whose name is strongly associated with her mentor Tom Waits. His style of phrasing and love for delicate, chamber arrangements is apparent in Hoop’s music but don’t expect any plagiarism or female version of Waits. Various inspirations are apparent in her work: Spanish and more generally southern guitar music, bits of traditional jazz and folk motives, all combined with her storytelling lyrics and cute vocal performance. City Bird is the first track from her upcoming Snowglobe EP and is a wonderful proof of her talent for sweet melody and tender instrumentation behind. City Bird’s video that mostly takes place in a puppet house is directed by Elia Petridis and fittingly captures beautiful melancholy of the song.
