The Multinauts starring Ariel Pink
Here’s “Flashback,” the first of two new episodes of sci-fi adventure series THE MULTINAUTS, featuring Ariel Pink in a dual role as both “sewer mutant” and himself.
The Multinauts takes the television genre and puts it into an art context by asking the viewer to look at television with a new perspective. While the show uses the narrative structure of television programming to tell wild imaginative stories exploring the heroes journey and virtual realities.
In addition, the production methods of the show should be taken into account. Honoring the history of television production, director Jennifer Juniper Stratford, believes The Multinauts production values belong in the future as a viable form of storytelling and a sincere continuation of the genre. Model making , 2D animation, and various analog and optical techniques are used. By working on a microscopic budget, it's limitations are honored and used as it's aesthetic. Where the studio system would create artless CGI universes by a team of programmers, The Multinauts is made by one woman on one computer. It's sets are created by
scavenging low-tech solutions and built out of recycled materials, trash, and other household materials, turning styrofoam into spaceships and paper towel rolls into pillars.
