The Black Angels – Phosphene Dream (2010)
-Phosphene Dream is the Austin-based outfit’s first release since 2008’s Directions to See a Ghost. This is the quintet’s third full-length album and will be released on Blue Horizon. Phosphene Dream is a real rocker. By not straying too far from their formula, yet showing signs of growth in songwriting, The Black Angels evolve right before our eyes. This is album will be a favorite of music fans who are into bands like The White Stripes and the 13th Floor Elevators.
-The album starts with “Bad Vibrations,” which channels The Velvet Underground, while lead singer Alex Maas’ vocals sound like Neil Young. The vibe of this track is very cool, yet gives you an ominous feeling like danger is on the horizon.
-“Sunday Afternoon” is a rocker. The tempo is upbeat and the song has some cool a Brit-pop vibe to it.
-“River of Blood” is another dark track that has an eerie vibe to it. This blues-driven track highlights guitarist Christian Bland’s axe work and he does not disappoint.
