Jacco Gardner – Hypnophobia (2015)

Having admitted that Hypnophobia “comes from a place where fears, darkness and creativity collide, like a slightly scary lucid dream,” one wonders if the album isn’t itself a twisted, surreal illustration of that weird limbo state which happens immediately before one falls asleep. With his barrel organ-tailored melodies and ethereal multi-layered vocals, Jacco Gardner is an alchemist who builds a fantasy world of engaging and hypnotic sounds which trigger involuntary impulses in the most hidden corners of our brains, sending us off into a journey throughout the unconscious. And if Jung’s theory is in fact correct, he may well be singing about our own.

Alabama Shakes – Sound & Color (2015)

If there were a prize for biggest development between albums, then Alabama Shakes would surely be 2015’s most triumphant band. This is not to say that their debut Boys & Girls wasn’t a strong debut, just that in terms of sound and tempo it risked being a little too tightly focused, perhaps even one dimensional in its southern rock and soul roots. True to its title, Sound & Color finds a much wider range of textures and contexts for Brittany Howard’s expressive belter of a voice, with impressive variations in pace, delivery and style. Part of this is no doubt due to having found an empathetic and creative producer in Blake Mills, himself an excellent songwriter and guitarist.

Marching Church – This World Is Not Enough (2015)

Scandinavian post-punks Iceage released their album Plowing into the Field of Love back in the fall, but just a few months later, frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt is heading into a new direction with a different project. This outfit is called Marching Church, and they will release the debut full-length This World Is Not Enough on March 31 through Sacred Bones/Posh Isolation.
Rønnenfelt has been using the Marching Church alias since 2010 and has issued a couple of short- form releases, but it wasn’t until 2013 that he formed its current incarnation with Kristian Emdal  and Anton Rothstein (Lower), Cæcilie Trier (Choir of Young Believers), Bo H. Hansen (Hand of Dust, Sexdrome) and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary).

Ilyas Ahmed – I Am All Your Own (2015)

For a decade, the songs of peripatetic guitarist and singer Ilyas Ahmed have been mistaken for atmospheres. Recorded in a cloud of echo and shrouded by the distortion endemic to lo-fi equipment, Ahmed’s pieces used to feel distant, transmitted from some faraway plane and warped en route. Though “Black Midas”, from his excellent 2005 debut, was a gorgeous duet for piano and guitar, the recording added enough ghostly essence for the result to imply witchcraft. At its core, “Stained Sky”, from his 2012 debut for Immune Recordings, was a chugging power ballad, but with the chords overloading the microphone and Ahmed’s voice interred by static, it became otherworldly, less a hit than a haze.

Cass. – Magical Magical – (2015)

In March 2014, the excellent Ghent based tape label Dauw opened up its musical doors. Since then weve closely kept up with their wonderful releases by some very dear friends, with the one exception of artists we knew personally being the wonderful Osnabrck artist, Cass. In 2014 Pieter from Dauw very kindly recom- mended Cass. to Home Normal for the release of his newest work. After a little time getting this all wrapped up, we are so happy to announce the release of his latest album, Magical Magical
