Phosphorescent- Song for Zula

Kate Nash – Girl Talk (2013)

English songstress Kate Nash began her music career by uploading her self-produced music to her MySpace page during the social media site’s heyday. Her confessional songs and simple melodies gained her popularity within the site, and she eventually signed with Moshi Moshi Records in 2007.
She attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology — the same South London performing arts school that brought the world Adele, Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse.
Her first two albums, “Made of Bricks” and “My Best Friend is You,” were released in 2007 and 2010, respectively, Both were praised for Nash’s bold lyrical prowess and peppy style.

Thee Oh Sees – Floating Coffin (2013)

..ALBUM OF THE MONTH...

Lord of the Flies (1990) , Harry Hook

Harry Hook directed this second screen adaptation of William Golding's cult novel about a group of British schoolchildren who revert to savagery when marooned on a deserted island. The new adaptation replaces British school children with a group of American military cadets and instead of a shipwreck, their plane crashes into the sea. The children swim ashore onto an island and try to fend for themselves, with the only surviving adult wracked with fever and crazed with pain. As the children get the feel of the island, the group separates into two different camps: Ralph (Balthazar Getty) and his followers prefer to act civilized and want to expand their efforts toward finding a way off the island; on the other hand, Jack (Chris Furrh) and his band revert to painting their faces, carrying spears and exploiting the island for survival. When the chances for rescue become less and less likely, the two factions go to war with each other, with tragic results.

He made several lo-fi home recordings under various names, including Songs: Albian, Songs: Radix, and Songs: Unitas, before settling on Songs: Ohia in 1996. Alex Calder – Time (2013)

... Drugarcic Mac DeMarca...

Edmonton, Canada is is better known for its oil exports than its songwriters. However, 23 year old Alex Calder is taking a strong step in towards this changing. Shifting to Vancouver saw Alex pairing with fellow Edmontonion Mac Demarco (that’s Alex as the female lead in the “Only You” video) playing in Makeout Videotape, scraping by, sleeping on couches and washing dishes. A move back to his mom’s in Edmonton was when Calder began to write and record his own material honing his craft only ever showing close friends his work. A strong love for classic 60’s/70’s guitar pop (Beach Boys, Beatles) as well as soft spots for Prince and Hall and Oates display his self proclaimed ‘fascination with pop music’. While his influences certainly shape his work it is his natural ear for melody and movement, which make Calder’s work both fluid and engaging. His knack and ambition both in his song writing and production provide a solid foundation for Calder’s music to drift in an out of psychy realms.

Charles Bradley – Victim of Love (2013)

Soul artist Charles Bradley is set to release Victim of Love, the follow-up to his debut album No Time for Dreaming, on April 2 via Daptone Records. Dubbed the “Screaming Eagle of Soul,” the 64-year old singer experienced a late-in-life career boom after being discovered by Daptone’s Gabriel Roth. Following the release of No Time for Dreaming Bradley garnered praise and buzz for his intense live performances as well as spots on several year-end best lists.
According to the album’s press release, “where Dreaming hewed close to the rough-and-ready R&B sound Daptone has become known for, Victim is stylistically more restless, edging closer into the kind of psychedelic soul The Temptations explored in the early ’70s.”

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2011) , Werner Herzog,Dmitry Vasyukov

Filmmakers Dmitriy Yasyukov and Werner Herzog team to offer a portrait of the rugged, self-sufficient Siberian trappers who lead incredibly difficult yet fulfilling lives far outside the confines of contemporary society. Though the southern region of Siberia is populous and prosperous, a long journey north eventually leads to the village of Bakhita, on the edge of the Yenisei river. With a population of just 300, Bakhita is reachable only by helicopter or boat, and offers no telephone lines or running water. The lives of the people who live there have changed little in the last few hundred years, and as a result, they're experts in living off of the land. By examining the culture and traditions of Bakhita, Yasyukov and Herzog challenge our concept of what it really means to live a truly free life.

Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), John Cassavetes

Can a straight-laced woman find happiness with a scruffy hippie who has a bad habit of getting beaten up? Her marriage ended badly, and her current relationship with her boyfriend Jim (John Cassavetes), who is inconveniently married to another woman, is hardly going any better. When Jim's wife threatens to commit suicide if he doesn't break off his affair with Minnie, he agrees to stop seeing her.

Das Boot (1981) , Wolfgang Petersen

synopsis Das Boot is one of the most gripping and authentic war movies ever made. Based on an autobiographical novel by German World War II photographer Lothar-Guenther Buchheim, the film follows the lives of a fearless U-Boat captain (Jurgen Prochnow) and his inexperienced crew as they patrol the Atlantic and Mediterranean in search of Allied vessels, taking turns as hunter and prey. There's very little plot, so the movie's power comes from both its riveting, epic battle scenes and its details of the boring hours spent waiting for orders or signs of the enemy.

Le Signe du Lion (1959), Eric Rohmer

This was the first film directed by Eric Rohmer, and although it is not without flaws, this story of a down-and-out foreigner in Paris has its merits. Pierre (Jess Hahn) is a music student and already living on a shoestring when he hears that he has inherited a large sum of money. But just when it looks like his luck is changing for the better, his so-called inheritance is suddenly ephemeral. Saddled with debts, he wanders around the shadier side of the city throughout the summer, trying to survive but instead sinking deeper and deeper into the morass of poverty. His friends help out, and at the end it looks like his luck will be changing once again.

Hymnalaya – Hymns (2013)

Apparat – Krieg und Frieden (Music For Theatre) (2013)

For Apparat, aka Berlin-based Sascha Ring, experiments in sound are strongly linked to exploring emotions. Over the course of seven album releases he has developed a multifarious, emotional universe. From early works, such as “Multifunktionsebene“ (2001) and “Duplex“ (2003), which took the abstractness out of electronic music and introduced a new spectrum of feelings beyond electronics’ well-tested modes, through collaborations with Ellen Alien (Orchestra of Bubbles) and Modeselektor (as Moderat), Apparat is always in transition. In 2010 he founded the Apparat Band and opened himself to a new sonic cosmos that culminated into “The Devil’s Walk” (2010), his first release on Mute.

Phosphorescent – Muchacho (2013)

...Heart & Soul...

Matthew Houck’s sixth album as Phosphorescent underwent an odd, protracted gestation.
Exhausted following a lengthy stint touring 2010’s acclaimed Here's To Taking It Easy, the Alabama-born singer-songwriter returned to Brooklyn and bought a bunch of old analogue gear.
Duly equipped, he began cooking up “strange sound pieces”. “I was thinking I might make an ambient record that had vocals, but no lyrics,” he says of this period.
A sudden, unexplained domestic crisis forced his hand, however, leading to an impulsive trip down to Mexico’s Yucután peninsula in the opening months of 2012.
He spent a week there, living in a beach hut and working on his songs, before returning to New York and restoring some sense of order to his life.
