Fantasmes – Redness Moon (2012)

What’s most interesting about Puerto Rico/NYC based band Fantasmes' latest album “Redness Moon” is not necessarily the obvious, but rather what is happening “underneath.” “Cloud Prepositions” emerges through a slow, purposeful, rising groove. Droning background pulses underscore prominent tambourine percussion, tubular-belled guitars and eno-esque treated keyboards. The vocals are muted and obscure, creating mood over storytelling.
 Distant conversational vocals are just out of earshot, adding to the mysterious nature. This allows the percussion to move forward, sharing prime sonic real estate with aggressively struck guitar chords. “Dance in the Shadows” slows it down again, with gentle acoustic guitar leading the way. Vocal lyrics become clearer, with the line “I should be there” as a repeated refrain. “Passages” brings back the trippy drone, slow building guitar chords and masked spoken word vocals.

Jagjaguwar Welcomes Newest Signee – Unknown Mortal Orchestra

The glammed-up, psychedelic, soulful, punked-out Unknown Mortal Orchestra is the brainchild of Oregon (via New Zealand) resident Ruban Nielson, a former Mint Chicks guitarist who mentions Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone, and RZA in the same breath. UMO’s self-titled debut full-length sounds like funkier Ween tackling Elephant 6, blending New Age ’70s recording techniques with that recent lava lamp/black-lit bedroom aesthetic (see Ariel Pink). It makes sense Nielson and his live band’s playing shows with Fat Possum labelmates Smith Westerns, sure. At the same time, you’ll think he might want to find a time machine and do a gig or two with Syd Barrett, the Kinks, or some private-press loner dude destined to be reissued and distributed via Forced Exposure. The music’s playful, but accomplished; familiar, but ambitiously charting its own collaged course.

“Moonrise Kingdom” sees Wes Anderson return to live-action filmmaking after a break of five years since the underwhelming “The Darjeeling Limited.” Thankfully, Anderson’s new picture is a return to form and his best film since “The Royal Tenenbaums.”
In his career, which now spans 10 years, Wes Anderson has managed to create a distinct style, which is shared in all of his films, and “Moonrise Kingdom” perfectly demonstrates Anderson’s recognizable visual and thematic blueprint. Like almost all of his films, “Moonrise Kingdom” features a vibrant color palette, a dysfunctional family and a hilarious show-stealing performance from Bill Murray.
The cast, which Anderson has assembled, is probably the most accomplished and diverse he has ever worked with, featuring Frances McDormand, Harvey Keitel and Tilda Swinton.

Bird – Shadows EP (2012)

Three piece Liverpool band Bird is the creation of Adele Emmas (singer, songwriter) Sian Williams (guitar, harmonies) and Alexis Samata (drums) Together they create dark, haunting, atmospheric music which will entice you in to their magical, other worldly universe. With beautiful, siren-esque vocals, tribal, hypnotic drum beats and spellbinding guitar work, Bird are refreshingly unlike anything that's currently on the music scene.
After bumping in to each other at a local gig one evening, Adele and Sian bonded over their mutual love for artists such as Leonard Cohen, Kate Bush, The Cocteau Twins, Warpaint, and Fleetwood Mac. The girls decided to swap numbers and soon after songwriter Adele and drummer Alexis invited Sian along for a 'jam' where they realized together they had something very special to give.

Mumford & Sons – Babel (2012)

Following on from their 2009 debut Sigh No More, which went platinum four times in the UK, three times in Australia and twice in the United States, Babel captures the ferocious live energy of the four-piece, and is not without its tender moments.

Written in Nashville, south London and Somerset, several songs on Babel were also recorded live. "When you're in a room with headphones and microphones and no one else, you play it quite differently to how you play it live", says Marcus Mumford, the band's lead vocalist, drummer and guitarist.
Alongside band mates Ben Lovett (keys, accordion, drums), Ted Dwane (string bass, drums, guitar) and Winston Marshall (banjo, dobro, guitar), Mumford & Sons have spent the best part of the last three years touring feverishly, and show no signs of slowing down.

The band, active in the 1980s and early 90s, have fallen out of fashion in the last two decades, and their name now means little to most people under the age of 30 – but, as Simon Reynolds argues in his accompanying notes for the OLI release, it would be inaccurate to describe them as a “lost” or overlooked band. Despite being considered the equals of My Bloody Valentine and the Pixies at the time, A.R. Kane – at its core a duo comprising Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala – have been somewhat written out of history.

Calexico – Algiers (2012)

The women in this story are the customers of amateur abortionist Isabelle Huppert. The time is 1941, and the place is a Nazi-occupied French town. Struggling to survive, Huppert turns to illegally terminating unwanted pregnancies for a hefty fee. As her income increases, Huppert moves her family from their grimy surroundings to a posh apartment, sharing her digs with her new friend, prostitute Marie Trintignant. Completely seduced by her affluent lifestyle, Huppert ignores her shell-shocked husband Francois Cluzet, preferring to dally with Nazi collaborator Nils Tavernier. Things take a disastrous turn after one of Huppert's "customers" dies and her disgruntled husband turns her over to the authorities. Story of Women was inspired by the real-life tale of Marie-Louise Girard, who in 1943 was executed by the Vichy Government, who'd declared abortion as a Crime Against the State because it diminished the number of potential soldiers.

In this murder mystery, a homicidal maniac goes on a killing spree beginning with his wife. He then kills six of her friends and is preparing to murder a seventh when the intended victim dies naturally. As a substitute, he murders his favorite hooker, leading the police right to him.
