Black Lips – Underneath the Rainbow (2014)

... Shezenje ...

Atlanta rock band Black Lips are returning with their seventh studio album Underneath the Rainbow on March 18th. The 12-song set was recorded over this year in New York with the Budos Band’s Tommy Brenneck and in Nashville, with the Black Keys‘ drummer Patrick Carney. ”Our main influences [this time] are pretty traditional,” bassist Jared Swilley tells Rolling Stone. “It’s roots music.”

Perri – Beach Ball (2012)

... From Montreal With Love ...

Fantastic album coming out of Montreal’s sprawling scene. Mellow slacker vibes and oddball pop sensibilities meet catchy songwriting.

Chinawoman - Let's Part in Style (2014)

Chinawoman’s third album moves towards the cinematic and confessional, centering on the themes of time and inevitability . “Let’s Part in Style” aggrandizes the moment in light of its fate, and asks how to keep things fresh – to trick the seasons, to allow time and decay to have their way but to do so in style.

The Horrors - 'I See You'

Sarah Blasko – I Awake: Live at The Sydney Opera House (2014)

Live albums are generally appreciated most by people who attended the actual gig as they provide a memento from the performance but also deliver the opportunity to relive the experience. Not to say that those who weren’t in attendance can’t enjoy such albums and in the case of Sarah Blasko and I Awake: Live at Sydney Opera House , even those who weren’t front row centre can appreciate what must have been a theatrical event.
The presence of the Sydney International Orchestra is immediately obvious in the big sounds and heavy percussion on “[explain]” giving the album a somewhat larger manifestation than previous Blasko offerings however the track still shows off the clean and crispness of Blasko solo at the piano.

Past life...

Life in a Day (2011) , Kevin Macdonald

Director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) and producer Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) team up to offer this candid snapshot of a single day on planet Earth. Compiled from over 80,000 YouTube submissions by contributors in 192 countries, Life in a Day presents a microcosmic view of our daily experiences as a global society. From the mundane to the profound, everything has its place as we spend 90 minutes gaining greater insight into the lives of people who may be more like us than we ever suspected, despite the fact that we're separated by incredible distances.

Jellyfish (2007) ,Shira Geffen, Etgar Keret

Israeli co-directors Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen's ensemble comedy drama Meduzot (aka Jellyfish, 2007) weaves together multiple seriocomic tales of intersecting lives, set against the deep azure backdrop of Middle Eastern seascapes. Affording equal emphasis to each tale, Keret and Geffen first hone in on Batya (Sarah Adler), a young woman employed as a caterer, whose firm places strongest emphasis on weddings. As the film opens, Batya breaks up with her boyfriend, and struggles with her supremely dysfunctional, argumentative parents, who correspond with her only by leaving periodic messages on her answering machine. Her life takes a most unpredictable turn when she happens upon a tearstained little girl (Nikol Leidman) who wanders out of the ocean, wearing only a pair of panties and toting an inner tube -- origin unknown. The foundling gravitates magnetically to Batya and refuses to separate from her.

The Grand Opening – Don’t Look Back Into the Darkness (2014)

The Grand Opening is the project of Stockholm multi-instrumentalist John Roger Olsson, a man who is counted among the finest representatives of this art. His work is seen as featuring what some call ‘the Swedish component’ which is defined as a deep melancholy woven beautifully into the music.
Thus is what sets it apart from the music of bands Olsson is often grouped with such as Talk Talk or American Music Club. Alongside that component that seems to evoke the lonely but romantic image of the Swedish countryside, Olsson explores themes of a man’s place in his world and his personal memories of the past, which were inspired by some old family photos he found.
‘Blacker Than Blue’ is a beautiful, gentle opener that sets the tone for the whole album.

Borgman (Alex van Warmerdam, 2013)

One of the Netherlands's most adventurous filmmakers, Alex van Warmerdam specializes in creepy, fractured riffs on folk tales, and acerbic, surreal analyses of contemporary European society. His latest, Borgman, opens with a tribe of strange nomads being driven from their elaborate network of underground shelters. Their ostensible leader, Borgman (Jan Bijvoet), approaches an upper-middle-class home and aggressively begs for money. The infuriated husband, Richard (Jeroen Perceval), responds by beating the stranger senseless in front of his appalled wife, Marina (Hadewych Minis). Soon after, Borgman infiltrates their lives — and Marina's dreams — while Richard begins exhibiting his own increasingly erratic and violent behaviour. Then, Borgman's associates begin circling the house.

Nebraska (Alexander Payne, 2013)

Director Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) takes the helm for this black and white road trip drama starring Bruce Dern as a tempestuous Missouri father who's convinced he's won a million dollar magazine sweepstakes, and Will Forte as the son who grudgingly agrees to drive him to Nebraska to claim his winnings.

Séraphine (2008) , Martin Provost

Belgian actress Yolande Moreau headlines this biopic, starring as a little-known but uncommonly brilliant painter. Frenchwoman Séraphine Louis (Moreau), aka Séraphine de Senlis, lived from 1864 to 1942. Though ostensibly a shepherdess and housekeeper whose chief duties involved cooking, cleaning, and ironing, in her off-hours Séraphine joyously turned to natural elements of the outdoor world, with which she felt a tremendous degree of emotional and spiritual communion.

Sun Kil Moon – Benji (2014)

... Album of the month ...
There are 11 songs on Sun Kil Moon’s astonishing sixth LP Benji, and in nearly all of them, somebody dies. And that’s not including the ones where someone’s on the verge of death or seriously headed towards it. Toddlers die, teenagers die, adults die, and the elderly die. They die of natural causes and in freak accidents. People die alone and people die by the dozens — handicapped children, single parents, grandmothers, serial killers. They die out of mercy and die long before they’re due. Rednecks die as respected men and white collar kids die in disgrace. But more importantly, Mark Kozelek wants us to know that they all lived, loved, fought, fucked up, and often did the best they could, before he sets out to “find some poetry to make some sense of this and give some deeper meaning” to their tragedies.

Nedelja Vece...

Janek Schaefer – Lay-By Lullaby (2014)

Cutie and the Boxer (2013) , Zachary Heinzerling

In 1972, Ushio Shinohara was a 40-year-old artist who had been living in New York City for three years and had won a small but distinguished following for what he called his "boxing paintings," created by dipping gloves in paint and literally pounding at the canvas. Ushio met Noriko Shinohara, a 19-year-old art student who had just arrived in the United States; the two fell into a relationship that was destined to become permanent when Noriko became pregnant a few months later.

Hatcham Social - Cutting Up The Present Leaks Out The Future (2014)

The Ruling Class (Peter Medak, 1972)

Peter O’Toole gives a tour-de-force performance as Jack, a man “cured” of believing he’s God—only to become Jack the Ripper incarnate. Based on Peter Barnes’s irreverent play, this darkly comic indictment of Britain’s class system peers behind the closed doors of English aristocracy. Insanity, sadistic sarcasm, and black comedy—with just a touch of the Hollywood musical—are all featured in this beloved cult classic directed by Peter Medak

Eagulls – Eagulls (2014)

From the highly anticipated debut album from Leeds’ Eagulls which will be released on Partisan Records.
To make up for the long lead time, Eagulls have shared the first proper single from their upcoming full-length (LP opener “Nerve Endings” was already let loose as a one-off with a Killing Joke cover).  “Tough Luck” files somewhere neatly between fellow British bruisers Savages and Denmark’s punishing Iceage. Delve into the quintet’s gloomy realm — where the mood remains overcast, the guitar lines stay taut, and the drums continuously crater .
