Bohren & der Club of Gore – Piano Nights (2014)

German quartet Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, who have been described as “the gentlest black metal band on earth,” are set to release their eighth studio album Piano Nights on February 3rd, 2014 via Ipecac. The album was inspired by a performance in Moscow where Chrisoph Clöser was playing a selection of the band’s songs on a grand piano.

Mephisto (1981), István Szabó

Based on Klaus Mann's novel, Mephisto details the rise of a Faustian character who figuratively sells his soul in exchange for greatness. Hendrik Hofgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer, offering an electric performance) is the star of a state-funded theater department who tires of his job. Like his friends, he pays lip service to socialist ideals fashionable for artists of his time -- that is, until the Nazis rise to power.

The Serpent's Egg (1977) , Ingmar Bergman

The Serpent's Egg, or Das Schlangenei is director Ingmar Bergman's second English language production (The Touch was his first). It is, however, his first completely non-Swedish production, made after his voluntary self-exile from Sweden over taxation issues. Set in Berlin in the early 1920s, it explores the fear and despair the city evokes in Manuela and Abel Rosenberg (Liv Ullmann and David Carradine), two Jewish trapeze artists. The suicide of Manuela's husband (Abel's brother), has stranded them in Berlin.

Mode Moderne – Occult Delight (2014)

... Stella Was A Diver ...

A decade ago, those involved were generally lumped into the 'post-punk revival', despite the bands inhabitant to this scene rarely having much to with the bleak intellectualism and and innovative nature of the genre's first wave. In more recent years, for better or for worse, there is a trend for more authenticity, with ferocious records last year such as Silence Yourself and Girls Like Us receiving relatively mainstream attention and acclaim. In fact, by comparison to other post-punk acts of recent years, Mode Moderne are reasonably unique - the only bands that they can be legitimately compared to being Wild Nothing and Interpol. But that's of recent years: there is a SHIT-LOAD of the post-punk/dreampop/goth bands of yore that can be heard in the Vancouver band's sombre, dry songcraft: Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, The Smiths, New Order, Gary Newman - you name them, Mode Moderne have used them to create Occult Delight's hazy black and white collage.

The Broken Circle Breakdown (Felix Van Groeningen, 2013)

The latter gave Felix international recognition after it was selected in Cannes (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, 2009). The film was the indigenous hit movie of  the 2009/10 season (465,000 admissions) and won several awards and nominations, both nationally and internationally. The admission figures in France and the Netherlands were particularly noteworthy.

Ansikte mot Ansikte (1976) , Ingmar Bergman

Liv Ullmann plays Dr. Jenny Isakson, a psychiatrist who is taking a vacation while her husband Dr. Erik Isakson (Sven Lindberg) is elsewhere. Haunted by visions of an old woman, Jenny suffers from profound, inexplicable depression. Desperately in search of a escape from her doldrums, she has an affair with married doctor Tomas Jacobi (Erland Josephson). This only serves to spark an attack of hysteria for Jenny. Again visited by hallucinations of the old woman, she attempts suicide. While hovering between life and death, she imagines she sees all the people who've been influential in her life, and rails against them for causing her neuroses. Only while recovering does she learn who the spectral old woman is and why she is undergoing so harrowing an emotional experience. Like his later Scenes From a Marriage, Bergman's Face to Face (Ansikte mot ansikte) originated as a multipart TV series, which was then pared down into a two-hour-plus feature film.

Bill Callahan – Have Fun with God (2014)

... Twin Peaks ...

Bill Callahan‘s well-metered, sophisticated, and subtly hilarious 2013 album Dream River was a glistening, understated experience. Its eight softer, drawn-out songs served as a gentle backdrop for Callahan‘s almost-spoken recitations and clever poetic epiphanies, and the entire set of tunes floated by in a Zen-like haze. A year or so later, the curious Have Fun with God offers up remixed versions of each of the eight tracks from Dream River, inspired by Callahan‘s love of ’70s dub and Jamaican music and influenced deeply by the echo-heavy rhythms and splintered vocal treatments of the genre. Callahan‘s heady, lyrically focused songwriting and dub mixing treatment are a strange pairing to say the least, but not a completely awkward one.

Cian Nugent & The Cosmos – Born with the Caul (2013)

The first long-player from mercurial Irish guitarist Cian Nugent under the Cian Nugent & the Cosmos moniker, the No Quarter-issued Born with the Caul explores much of the same sonic territory as his elegant and deliberate 2011 solo outing Doubles, but the addition of a backing band (strings, drums, horns, base, and keys) goes a long when fleshing out Nugent’s evocative, contemporary spin on late-’60s and early-’70s progressive folk. A heady blend of influences both old (John Fahey, John Martyn) and new (Jack Rose, Jim O’Rourke), the ambitious and atmospheric, 3 track, 45-minute Born with the Caul impresses with its new school take on old-school psych-folk.

Julie Byrne – Rooms With Walls and Windows (2014)

Rooms With Walls and Windows is the first album by Seattle-by-way-of-Chicago singer, songwriter & guitarist Julie Byrne. Blending psychedelic & traditional folk elements, Julie Byrne creates a highly personal & quietly mystical world that echoes the early work of Leonard Cohen & Vashti Bunyan. Rooms With Walls and Windows’ twelve tracks were collected from two limited edition cassette releases, recorded between 2011 & 2012 by Jake Acosta in Chicago, IL.

Jeune & Jolie (François Ozon, 2013)

Francois Ozon's Young and Beautiful stars Marine Vacth as Isabelle, a seventeen-year-old on a summer holiday with her family when she loses her virginity. Upon returning home, she begins working as a prostitute, eventually developing something of a relationship with an older john who treats her better than many of her other clients. After an unexpected event, Isabelle's mother learns of the girl's secret life, causing a great amount of conflict between everyone in the family, and leading to complications between Isabelle and her stepfather.

Mvnners – Away From You EP (2013)

Ricky (2009) François Ozon

Gallic director François Ozon's idiosyncratic Ricky represents an attempt to weld together two polar-opposite and seemingly incompatible genres: kitchen-sink realistic drama and high-concept Spielbergian fantasy. Loosely inspired by a Rose Tremain short story, the tale opens on a council estate just east of Paris (in the Seine-et-Marne), where single mom Katie (Alexandra Lamy) ekes out a low-key and fairly miserable existence. She earns her keep as a factory worker while glumly attempting to raise her seven-year-old daughter, Lisa (Mélusine Mayance), on the side.

Love Streams (1984) , John Cassavetes

In this emotional roller coaster ride, Robert Harmon (John Cassavetes) is a street-wise, sometimes obnoxious writer currently working on a book about the seamier side of buying/selling love, and Sarah Lawson (Gena Rowlands) is an emotive wife and mother struggling through a divorce and custody battle. When Sarah lands on Robert's doorstep with her suitcases, it seems at first that she has returned to her husband. Robert has several women staying at his place (research sources!), but when his real ex-wife arrives with their young son, he sends the women packing. Sarah, it turns out, is Robert's sister. As the two work out their own live's hurdles -- Robert, the unaccustomed father with his 8-year-old son, and Sarah, trying to cope with her custody battle and its results -- their way of handling adversity and personal burdens becomes the real subtext of the film. This film won the Golden Bear Award at the 1984 Berlin Film Festival.

Ginger & Rosa (2012) , Sally Potter

Rebellious London teens Ginger and Rosa find their friendship tested against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis in this period drama from writer/director Sally Potter (Yes, Rage). The year is 1962. As the international dispute between the Soviet Union and the U.S. threatens to cast a shadow over the entire world, Ginger (Elle Fanning) seeks solace in the arts as Rosa (Alice Englert) favors such distractions as cigarettes and boys.

Rage (2009) , Sally Potter

Director Sally Potter examines the effects of globalism in the information age in this drama following a young blogger named Michelangelo as he interviews a series of eccentric subjects over the course of seven days. In a prominent New York fashion house, flamboyant designer Merlin prepares to debut his latest collection as curious blogger Michelangelo shoots interviews on his cell phone. His subjects; a disparate mix of New York denizens including a celebrity supermodel named Minx, a financial backer named Tiny Diamonds, a seamstress named Anita de Los Angeles, a pizza delivery boy named Vijay, a war photographer named Frank, and a critic named Mona Carvell.

Blank Realm – Grassed Inn (2014)

... Wasted Years / No Tears  ...

Blank Realm seem pretty set for 2014. They have gone straight for the jugular with new release Grassed Inn, the follow up to 2012’s Go Easy.Rambunctious and overzealous guitars punctuated with loose jams confirm their infectious ability to throw out a jaunty pop song, lovingly lauded on opener ‘Back to the Flood’.  It’s a really stark but brutal opening and the Spencer siblings, aided by Luke Walsh, complement each other with an uncanny ease.‘Falling Down the Stairs’ is Byrds-like but with a blackened heart.

Warpaint – Warpaint (2014)

... I n t i m n i j i ...

When it came to recording their second album, Warpaint had a simple, effective strategy. "We leant towards things we thought were sexier," says guitarist and vocalist Theresa Wayman. "It was an actual adjective we would use, like, 'Oh, that's sexy' or 'I think it would be sexier if we did this…' That actually happened quite a bit."It's the sort of mantra that would bring a smile to any slick-haired Belstaff-sporting record exec, yet the sound of Warpaint, the eponymous follow-up to the band's widely acclaimed debut The Fool, is not your standard kind of sexy. Woozy, dreamy and rich, it's an album that drags you in until you're enraptured, but there's not much in the way of guttural grunts or cock-waggling guitar solos. As a sidenote, there are no cocks in this particular band neither.

Marissa Nadler – July (2014)

... Povratak Carobnice ...

Marissa Nadler’s new album is effectively this concept brought to life. The Boston-based chanteuse’s sixth album, July, is set for a February 4 release on Sacred Bones in the US, and a February 10 release on Bella Union in the UK. Recorded at Avast Studio in Seattle with Randall Dunn (Earth, sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room) and featuring Eyvand Kang (strings), Steve Moore (synths), and Phil Wandscher (guitar), July has that same haunting, ethereal, dusty Depression-era carnival quality that characterizes Nadler’s best work, but the lyrics on the new album set her firmly on the modern highways and fluorescent-lit hotels of the modern carnival ghost ...

Ed Harcourt – Time of Dust (2014)

... Najbolji od Here Be Monsters ...

On January 6th 2014, the critically-celebrated British songwriter Ed Harcourt will release Time of Dust, a 28-minute long mini-album of new material via CCCLX Music. There are still pianos and bitter-sweet lyrical twists, but a darkness has descended and the record marks the beginning of a slightly gloomier new sound.
Thirteen years ago, a mini-album named Maplewood was Ed's first release, "Time of Dust feels not unlike its distant cousin" says Ed. "Early next year, I'm heading into the studio with Flood (Nine Inch Nails, PJ Harvey, etc) to work on an album of evil songs, but before I set sail for the edge of the world, I wanted to break people in gently. Think of Time of Dust as a piece of the map I'll be using to navigate the fog and fire. Or maybe it's the creak of the floorboard before the wolf pounces?"

Damien Jurado – Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son (2014)

... Prvi Veliki album 2014-te ...
... Album of the month ...

Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son is intended as a sequel to 2012's Maraqopa — both were produced by the terrific Richard Swift, who's made fine records of his own — but it's far from a rehash of old ideas. Both records reflect on ideas of alienation, disappearance and the pursuit of self, yet Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son takes them further, while enshrouding Jurado's voice in arrangements that alternately sparkle and search.

Divlje godine:Tom Waits - muzika i mit

Divlje godine predstavlja dirljivo slavljenje jednog čoveka i njegovih mitova.

Angel Olsen – Burn Your Fire for No Witness (2014)

... If only our dreams will coming through, maybe there will be some time for me and you ...

For Missouri-born, singer-songwriter and guitarist Angel Olsen, the recording of her second album was a relaxed and enjoyable process, despite the fact that she was working on her own, highly personal material in creative collaboration for the first time, with musicians she'd been playing with for barely six months. That the three are now a band proper says much about not only their talent, but also the singer's desire to push her extraordinarily compelling songs into new territory and watch them develop.
Olsen, of course, has an impeccable cooperative pedigree. As a member of Emmett Kelly's The Cairo Gang, she's toured with Bonnie "Prince" Billy (on whose Wolfroy Goes To Town album she appeared) and has twice duetted with Marissa Nadler, to devastatingly minimal effect, but her first two recordings were very much Olsen in solo mode. The kitchen-recorded, reverb-shrouded Strange Cacti EP from 2010 was almost spectral in its simplicity, while Half Way Home, her debut album of 2012 was a work of poetic profundity delivered on acoustic guitar, with mere hints of double bass and drums and by a remarkable voice. Now, Burn Your Fire For No Witness.
